Welcome to my Whitney day blog live from\u00a0Saratoga Race Course<\/a> for an especially strong edition of the $1 million Whitney Stakes (G1).<\/p>\n

I’ll provide updates on the 1 1\/8-mile Whitney, today’s other three grade 1 races, and the entire 14-race card while also pointing you to all of the coverage BH is providing today from senior correspondent Bob Ehalt, assistant news editor Sean Collins, and features editor Karen Johnson.<\/p>\n

Update 24: Pletcher Secures Career Win 6,000<\/p>\n

You didn’t think we would cut out early did you? Not with a big milestone on\u00a0the line.<\/p>\n

Under fading light Saturday at Saratoga Race Course<\/a>, trainer Todd Pletcher secured the 6,000th win of his career when Versailles Road<\/a>\u00a0 rallied from just off the pace under Manny Franco to win the day’s final event,\u00a0race 14. Pletcher entered the day with 5,999 career wins and 10 horses entered at Saratoga. The final starter of those 10 delivered the big prize.<\/p>\n

Racing Hall of Famer Pletcher, who leads all North American\u00a0trainers in career purse earnings at $525,978,783, is just the seventh trainer to reach 6,000 career wins.<\/p>\n

Before Saturday’s card, Bob Ehalt talked with owner Mike Repole, who has sent many of his top horses to Pletcher, about the approaching milestone.<\/p>\n

“Someone asked me if I wanted to take out an ad saluting Todd on 6,000. I asked, :How many does he need. They said ’12.’ I told them it would be next July. Then he won a dirt race (July 31) and he won five races the next day.”<\/p>\n

“When you look at Todd’s worst year it’s better than 90% of the other trainers’ best year,” Repole said. “He has the longevity and the consistency.<\/p>\n

“At the end of the day, he’s a little underappreciated. He has a little Tim Duncan in him. He’s one of the greatest (NBA) players of all-time and people took him for granted. He did his job and won championships. No emotion. He just wins championships. Todd doesn’t show any emotions. I do it for him.”<\/p>\n

Update 23:\u00a0Instant Reaction to Whitney Day<\/p>\n

Racing has enjoyed back to back years with a strong group of older runners. That reached another high point Saturday with a deep field gathered for the Whitney Stakes (G1), which would be won by 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1)-Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Sovereignty<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

We can all celebrate that win. When a dual classic winner takes a top race at 4, it\u00a0most assuredly is a great outcome\u00a0for the game.<\/p>\n

With his wins in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) Magnitude<\/a>\u00a0 remains right up there in the older horse division but now\u00a0Sovereignty is right with him. Magnitude didn’t fire Saturday but let’s hope these two can meet again this season.<\/p>\n

Nitrogen<\/a>\u00a0 did nothing to hurt her status as the top older filly or mare in North America, leading the way in the Whitney and then holding second.<\/p>\n

On the turf,\u00a0Deterministic<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0 landed his sixth straight victory by winning the Fourstardave Stakes (G1T) for a second straight year. North America seems to have a pair of top turf runners this year in Deterministic (a miler) and Burnhanm Square (a distance horse). Let’s hope they both can make it to the Breeders’ Cup where they’ll face some top international runners. We’ll see who shows up, but I think they’ll fare quite well.<\/p>\n

Update 22: Handicapping Review<\/p>\n

My singles (win bets) didn’t do especially well but a longshot A selection (Summer Starlet<\/a>\u00a0) and some decent prices on Bs (Il Siciliano<\/a>\u00a0 and Glacius<\/a>\u00a0) helped on the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a partner, I did have a winning middle of the card Pick 4 involving Summer Starlet and Il Siciliano that was closed out by my betting partner’s top choice, Explora<\/a>\u00a0. (Betting as a team sometimes has its advantages.)<\/p>\n

Still, my top choices today didn’t fire so I finished in the red.<\/p>\n

Going in I was looking for closers on the turf, which was the main reason I went against Deterministic<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0\u2014a terrific horse that I’ve singled at times during his win streak. Part of me would like to blame the rain that arrived before the Fourstardave and may have affected the course, but I wouldn’t argue if someone accused me of making excuses on that one.<\/p>\n

In the Whitney, Sovereignty ran huge and closed well on a track that did see that running style play well. But let’s not get carried away with any track bias thoughts;\u00a0he was much the best, special horse. On the other hand filly Nitrogen<\/a>\u00a0, who ran into the teeth of that bias, as well as Antiquarian<\/a>\u00a0, who also contested that pace, delivered big efforts as well.<\/p>\n

(The final main track race of the day, race 13, continued with another winning closer as Will Not Be Swayed<\/a>\u00a0 rallied to victory.)<\/p>\n

In terms of betting some stakes races this year, I’d enjoyed success with Lagynos and Magnitude this season and didn’t see much reason to get off the train but they came up short today while Deterministic and Sovereignty registered some huge performances. What a day of racing!<\/p>\n

Update 21: Sovereignty Roars Back<\/p>\n

While Sovereignty<\/a>\u00a0 has raced well this season, victory had eluded the 2025 dual classic winner. That all changed Saturday as the Godolphin homebred rallied wide under jockey Junior Alvarado to post an open lengths win in the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The son of Into Mischief<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 completed the 1 1\/8-mile test in 1:47.91 on a fast track. Leading older filly Nitrogen<\/a>\u00a0 raced well on the lead and then held second while Antiquarian<\/a>\u00a0, also forwardly placed early, held third. Favored Magnitude<\/a>\u00a0 did not have his best and faded in the stretch to finish off the board.<\/p>\n

Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty had earned placings in his two previous starts this year, finishing second to White Abarrio<\/a>\u00a0 in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and third to Magnitude in the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1). White Abarrio also was off the board Saturday at Saratoga.<\/p>\n

Update 20: Glacius Takes Saratoga Derby<\/p>\n

In his United States debut, Glacius<\/a>\u00a0 rolled to a front-end victory in the $750,000 Saratoga Derby (G1T). The son of Too Darn Hot\u00a0 completed the 1 3\/8-mile test in 1:53.22 on turf listed as firm although Saratoga did see some rain today.<\/p>\n

Trained by Hugo Palmer, Glacius was guided to victory by Luis Saez, who landed his second win of the day. He was followed by West End Kid<\/a>\u00a0 and Title Role<\/a>\u00a0. The victory was the first win in the United States for Palmer.<\/p>\n

Update 19: No Surface Condition Changes<\/p>\n

With the sun back out at Saratoga Race Course<\/a>, both turf courses are still listed as firm and the dirt track is listed as fast.<\/p>\n

Surface biases are always tough calls but it’s interesting that after the rain today, Deterministic won the Fourstardave Stakes (G1T) from just off the pace on the inner turf and then Glacius<\/a>\u00a0 scored a front-end victory in the Saratoga Derby (G1) on the Mellon Turf Course. Those courses had been playing to closers Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n

Update 18: Deterministic Repeats<\/p>\n

After pressing the pace set by Mi Bago<\/a>\u00a0 early, Deterministic<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0 delivered a powerful stretch run to register a clear victory in the Fourstardave Stakes (G1T), winning that mile turf test for a second straight year and extending his win streak to six straight races.<\/p>\n

Deterministic was guided to victory by Kendrick Carmouche, completing the race in 1:35.07 on an inner turf officially listed as firm although a downpour began about five minutes before the race and continued through its running.<\/p>\n

The winner, a son of Liam’s Map<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0, is trained by Miguel Clement for owners St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable.<\/p>\n

Mi Bago finished second and Zulu Kingdom<\/a>\u00a0 was third. After a couple of objections not involving the winner were reviewed, the stewards made no change to the order of finish.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the race, the rain stopped, and sunshine and white clouds returned. Stay tuned!<\/p>\n

Update 17: Rain Arrives<\/p>\n

Dark clouds have settled over Saratoga. For now, it’s a light rain. Many fans are continuing to hang out along the rail, not as yet bothered by the light rain.<\/p>\n

At about 5:10 p.m., the rain picked up a notch. I don’t think we’ll see a change of course status ahead of the Fourstardave Stakes (G1T) but it’s a steady rain at this point.<\/p>\n

And two minutes later (5:12 p.m.), let’s go with “summer downpour.” Welcome to Saratoga in August!<\/p>\n

Update 16: Explora Secures Grade 1 in Test<\/p>\n

After racing on the lead early in three of her past four starts, Explora<\/a>\u00a0 relaxed just a bit, racing in third about three lengths back entering the turn of the $500,000 Test Stakes (G1) Aug. 8 at Saratoga Race Course<\/a>. She then rallied wide to take command coming out of that\u00a0turn in the seven-furlong test. She drew off to win by six lengths, completing\u00a0the race in 1:22.42.<\/p>\n

Winning trainer Bob Baffert told New York Racing Association media that she has learned to rate just a bit and prepared well in training this summer at Churchill Downs<\/a>. He later noted that not drawing inside also helped her Saturday.<\/p>\n

Explora was guided to victory by Flavien Prat, who landed his second win on the card. The daughter of Blame<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 is campaigned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman.<\/p>\n

Baffert noted that Explora was acting up a bit in the paddock but after hosing her down, she settled.<\/p>\n

Percy’s Bar<\/a>\u00a0 rallied for second while Goodall<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0, who pressed early, finished third.<\/p>\n

Update 15: Ortiz Jr. Off Remaining Mounts<\/p>\n

In a big change ahead of today’s four grade 1 stakes, multiple Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has been excused from his remaining mounts today after injuring his left ankle ahead of the eighth race.<\/p>\n

Not all of the replacements were immediately announced. The remaining mounts for Ortiz included: Race 9, the Test Stakes (G1), On Time Girl<\/a>\u00a0, Race 10, the Fourstardave Stakes (G1T), Rhetorical<\/a>\u00a0; Race 11;, the Saratoga Derby (G1T), McCready<\/a>\u00a0; Race 12, the Whitney Stakes (G1) White Abarrio<\/a>\u00a0; Race 13, Romantic Dancer<\/a>\u00a0; Race 14, Very Connected<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dylan Davis will ride On Time Girl\u00a0in the Test. Manny Franco will ride Rhetorical. Junior Alvarado will ride McCready. Micah Husbands will ride White Abarrio.<\/p>\n

NYRA media reports\u00a0that Ortiz has been transported to a local hospital to evaluate his injury.<\/p>\n

Update 14: Oscar Scores, Denies Pletcher<\/p>\n

And the Runner Is<\/a>\u00a0, who was close to the even-money favorite in race 8, was scratched about one minute before post time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u00a0left Oscar<\/a>\u00a0 as the 2-1 favorite and he lived up to that billing, rallying along the hedge to seize the lead in early stretch and then holding off a late charge from the Todd Pletcher-trained Bold Leadership<\/a>\u00a0 to edge that one by a nose. First-time starter Oscar completed the 1 1\/16-mile turf test in: 1:43.37 under Tyler Gaffalione. The son of Oscar Performance<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 is campaigned by Elements Racing and trained by Miguel Clement.<\/p>\n

The victory means Pletcher will have to wait a bit longer to celebrate career win 6,000.<\/p>\n

For horizontal wagers of four or more legs, backers of And the Runner Is saw their money shift to the winning favorite. (That worked out for yours truly as our partnership is now live to Movie Night<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0, Goodall<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0, and Explora<\/a>\u00a0 to close out a Pick 4.)<\/p>\n

Well aware that the front-end is not the place to be today in turf races today, riders have been putting up slow early fractions but horses are still rallying late. Although those winners are staying a bit closer to the slow pace. Oscar broke on top but Gaffalione was able to have him rate in a pressing position.<\/p>\n

Update 13: Forged Steel Scratched From Whitney<\/p>\n

Longshot Forged Steel<\/a>\u00a0, who would have supplied additional early speed in the Whitney Stakes (G1), has been scratched. That leaves a field of seven in the 1 1\/8 mile stakes.<\/p>\n

Check other late scratches at Equibase.<\/a><\/p>\n

Update 12: Shooting Starlet<\/p>\n

First-time starter Sumnmer Starlet provided the biggest “wow” moment of the day with a wide rally to surge to a decisive victory in the sixth race, a maiden special weight race for juvenile fillies.<\/p>\n

The daughter of City of Light<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 is owned by BC Stables, Wattswood Stables, Bob Albritton, Jay\u00a0Graham, and David Baggett. She was bred in Kentucky by Newstead Corp. The winner is trained by Steve Asmussen, who secured his second win of the day; and guided to victory by Jose Ortiz, who landed win No. 3 on the card. (see Update 9)<\/p>\n

The winner rallied from the back half of the field. I thought the main track was played fair yesterday, but early runners seem to be up against it today. (see Update 11)<\/p>\n

Update 11: Surface Play<\/p>\n

In three of the first four main-track races, winning horses have rallied from fifth or further back (including both dead-heat winners in the . No horse has won on the front end although the first-race winner, Gaudreau<\/a>\u00a0, raced in second and just off the pace early.<\/p>\n

In fairness, Admiralty<\/a>\u00a0 rallied from fifth to win the second race but was within two lengths of the leader at first call\u2014a pressing type run. Still, it’s worth keeping an eye on. At the very least, it’s safe to say that horses can rally on this track.<\/p>\n

In the one turf race today, conducted on the Mellon Course, dead-heat winner Hand Over Heart<\/a>\u00a0 rallied from last of eight and Sail With the Wind<\/a>\u00a0 from sixth. That running style matches what we were seeing yesterday on both courses.<\/p>\n

We await race 6, where there’s a lot of buzz that Red Poppy will provide trainer Todd Pletcher with his milestone win.<\/p>\n

Update 10: A Filly in the Whitney<\/p>\n

What do we think about the chances of top filly Nitrogen<\/a>\u00a0 in today’s Whitney Stakes? She already owns a win over this track this year\u2014the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1)\u2014her third win in as many starts on the Spa main track.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Congrats to the sportsmanship of Nitrogen’s connections as her entry certainly has added a lot of intrigue to this year’s eight-horse field. Read Bob Ehalt’s feature on trainer Mark Casse, the trainer of Nitrogen,<\/a> and his thinking going into today’s 1 1\/8 mile test. Comments are open below.<\/p>\n

Update 9: Tagermeen Prevails<\/p>\n

Despite a slow start, Tagermeen<\/a>\ud83d\udd25<\/a>\u00a0 rallied to win race 5, an allowance race at seven furlongs on the main track. The son of Into Mischief<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0 held off Fact<\/a>\u00a0 late in the race completed in 1:23.46.<\/p>\n

It’s the second straight win for Tagermeen, who earned a maiden special weight victory June 27 at Churchill Downs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr., on Pretty Boy Miah, who finished off the board, lodged an objection against the winner but the stewards found no foul.<\/p>\n

With that decision, jockey Jose Ortiz secured his second win of the day and trainer Steve Asmussen landed his first. (I suspect more are on the way, we’ll see.)<\/p>\n

Update 8: Dead-Heat Excites Crowd<\/p>\n

A big roar went up from the steadily growing crowd at Saratoga when the result of the fourth race was posted as Hand Over Heart<\/a>\u00a0 and Sail With the Wind<\/a>\u00a0 finished in a dead-heat for the win in the 1 1\/16-mile allowance\u00a0test on the turf.<\/p>\n

Watching the race live and then glancing at one replay, I thought Sail With the Wind prevailed. Fortunately no one offered a “close-finish” wager to me.<\/p>\n

That makes jockeys Dylan Davis and Junior Alvarado winners as well as trainers Chad Brown and Jeremiah Englehart. Brown has two wins on the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just after the race the sun made its best showing of the day. Overcast skies have given way to sun and white clouds.<\/p>\n

Update 7: Sad News Away From Spa<\/p>\n

Had to pause a bit from this live blog to write up some sad news. The young stallion Girvin<\/a>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0, who has been on the upswing, died suddenly today at Airdrie Stud near Midway, Ky. Airdrie’s Bret Jones called him an “absolute gift.”<\/p>\n

Update 6: Gadreau Delivers<\/p>\n

In the stretch Gadreau, my top pick, dug in to hold off Coach Pope and U. S. S. Valor to win on debut. (Hopefully that’s not the high point of my handicapping today!)<\/p>\n

Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farm, Gaudreau<\/a>\u00a0 is a son of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist and is out of stakes-placed Free Cover, by Congrats.<\/p>\n

Update 5: late scratch<\/p>\n

Coach’s Pals\u00a0 has been scratched from the first race. He was on his way to the gate when scratched.<\/p>\n

Update 4: Handicapping Thoughts<\/p>\n

Today’s win bets are Vibe<\/a>\u00a0 in race 3, And the Runner Is<\/a>\u00a0 in race 12, Lagynos<\/a>\u00a0 in race 10 (the Fourstardave), Remember Mamba<\/a>\u00a0 in race 11 (Saratoga Derby), and Magnitude<\/a>\u00a0 in race 12 (Whitney).<\/p>\n

Update 3: Setting the Stage<\/p>\n

Looking for a hot jockey today? Manny Franco tied the Saratoga single-day wins record when he guided six horses to victory yesterday, capping his big day with a victory on Bottas<\/a>\u00a0 in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (G2T)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Besides that accomplishment, Bottas’ victory put trainer Miguel Clement in the winner’s circle on the same day that his late father, Christophe, was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In Friday’s other stakes race at Saratoga, Kentucky Belle<\/a>\u00a0 delivered a scintillating late run to capture the Saratoga Oaks (G2T).<\/a><\/p>\n

Analysis:<\/strong> Upon watching yesterday’s races and reviewing the results, both turf courses were playing toward horses off the pace. I did not find any bias on the main track.<\/p>\n

Update 2: Milestone Watch<\/p>\n

Besides today’s very strong edition of the Whitney Stakes (G1), and the day’s three other grade 1 tests, trainer Todd Pletcher will be aiming for a milestone.<\/p>\n

The Racing Hall of Fame conditioner enters the day with 5,999 wins. Pletcher, who leads all North American\u00a0trainers in career purse earnings at $525,978,783, will try to become just the seventh trainer to reach 6,000 career wins.<\/p>\n

He has 10 horses entered today, all at Saratoga Race Course<\/a>: Race 1, With Luck Forward; race 2, Live; race 3 Classicist and Vibe; race 4, Lovely Cristina; race 6, Red Poppy; Race 8, Bold Leadership and Djokovic; race 12, Antiquarian<\/a>\u00a0 (Whitney Stakes); race 14, Versailles Road.<\/p>\n

My thought:<\/strong> Pletcher lands the milestone win with Vibe<\/a>\u00a0 in race 3, as he bounces back from a poor effort in the Metropolitan Handicap (G1).<\/p>\n

Overcast skies are greeting early arrivers today at the Spa. That has contributed to cooler temperatures than yesterday with the current temperature at 76 degrees with an expected high of 85 around 3-4 p.m.

\nThere’s only a slight chance of rain today, peaking at 35% around 5 p.m.<\/p>\n

To start the day, the main track is fast and the turf courses are firm.<\/p>\n

Race day<\/p>\n

The Whitney Stakes will be contested as Race 12 on today’s card with an expected post time of 6:33 p.m.<\/p>\n

The $500,000 Test Stakes (Race 9, 4:36 p.m.) for 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs begins a stretch of four straight grade 1 races. It will be followed by the $750,000 Fourstardave Stakes (Race 10, 5:14 p.m.) for 3-year-olds and older going a mile on the inner turf, the $750,000 Saratoga Derby Stakes (Race 11, 5:52) for 3-year-olds going 1 3\/16 miles on the turf, and then the Whitney.<\/p>\n

The 14-race card is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. ET with a maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds. The day’s final race is scheduled for 7:39 p.m., an allowance-optional claiming race on the inner turf.<\/p>\n

The $1 Pick 6 begins with the Test, includes all four grade 1 races plus the day’s final two races. Oddly, there is no Pick 5 that includes all four of the grade 1 stakes. The Pick 5 begins with the Fourstardave, as does the Grand Slam (a personal favorite wager).<\/p>\n

Television<\/p>\n

FOX Sports will be the home of today’s races with the main FOX channel presenting the four grade 1 stakes from 5-7 p.m. FS2 will cover the other races on the card from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and then after the FOX broadcast from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. for the day’s final two races.<\/p>\n
