{"id":990095,"date":"2026-08-09T01:30:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T01:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/990095\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T01:30:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T01:30:17","slug":"former-cornyn-allies-open-for-ken-paxton-at-san-antonio-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/990095\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Cornyn allies open for Ken Paxton at San Antonio rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ken-paxton-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ken-paxton-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ken Paxton<\/a> tapped some unexpected names to introduce him at his packed campaign rally at the Angry Elephant on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bexar County Commissioner Grant Moody and San Antonio Councilwoman Misty Spears took the stage asking the roughly 200 Republicans in attendance to rally their friends and neighbors around Paxton\u2019s U.S. Senate bid this November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes just months after the two were <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AndreaDrusch\/status\/2056460766283289071\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AndreaDrusch\/status\/2056460766283289071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">stumping for Paxton\u2019s primary opponent<\/a>, the more moderate U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who they said was the best candidate to hold off Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/james-talarico-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/james-talarico-2026-candidate-for-u-s-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">James Talarico<\/a> in a tough race this November. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Antonio has long been a last bastion of GOP moderates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-senate-race-john-cornyn-ken-paxton-election-results\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-senate-race-john-cornyn-ken-paxton-election-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Paxton went on to trounce<\/a> Cornyn in the primary runoff, and his party is now scrambling to unite voters around a candidate with baggage from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/12\/19\/records-in-texas-ag-ken-paxtons-divorce-case-are-unsealed\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/12\/19\/records-in-texas-ag-ken-paxtons-divorce-case-are-unsealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">high-profile affair<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/03\/26\/ken-paxton-plea-deal-securities-fraud-felony\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/03\/26\/ken-paxton-plea-deal-securities-fraud-felony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">personal legal troubles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/05\/27\/ken-paxton-impeached-texas-attorney-general\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/05\/27\/ken-paxton-impeached-texas-attorney-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">years of disagreements<\/a> with other Texas GOP leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite those weaknesses, nearly all of San Antonio\u2019s elected Republicans were in attendance Saturday, urging voters rally their friends and neighbors against sitting out this election.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SAReport-Ken-Paxton-20.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5449434\"  \/>Attorney General Ken Paxton campaigns Saturday in San Antonio at the Angry Elephant. Credit: Vincent Reyna for the San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we stand for is on the line here, and what we have before us is Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is ready to deliver that Texas promise up to the U.S. government,\u201d said Spears, a longtime GOP activist before she was <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/san-antonio-election-results-district-9-misty-spears\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/san-antonio-election-results-district-9-misty-spears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">elected to City Council last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo what are you going to do about it? Are you going to sit out? Are you going to say \u2018Ah, it\u2019s fine\u2019? Yell at the TV, at Fox News, and be upset? No, you\u2019re going to get out there. You\u2019re going to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councilman Marc Whyte (D10), state Rep. Mark Dorazio (R-San Antonio), state Sen. Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) and TX23 congressional candidate Brandon Herrera were also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voter apathy headed into the midterm election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/14\/politics\/republicans-trump-2026-midterm-election-voter-turnout\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/14\/politics\/republicans-trump-2026-midterm-election-voter-turnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">is a real concern for Republicans<\/a>, who already control every lever of power in Washington, and at the state level too, in Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/03\/04\/texas-2026-primary-turnout-democratic-republican\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/03\/04\/texas-2026-primary-turnout-democratic-republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas Democrats already outvoted their Republican counterparts<\/a> in the March primary election this year. And in San Antonio, where interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-justin-nichols-gay-texas-state-republican-executive-committee\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-justin-nichols-gay-texas-state-republican-executive-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">this year\u2019s state GOP convention<\/a> dropped off after Paxton\u2019s victory, some say the party\u2019s nominee for U.S. Senate is alienating even party faithful headed into November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against that backdrop, Texas GOP leaders who don\u2019t typically spend much time campaigning in this area are suddenly working to unite conservatives with whatever leverage they can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, Gov. Greg Abbott, who is also on the ballot in November, called a news conference <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/greg-abbott-takes-aim-at-city-owned-utilities-like-cps-energy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/greg-abbott-takes-aim-at-city-owned-utilities-like-cps-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">taking aim at San Antonio\u2019s city-owned energy company<\/a>, which he said was taxing residents in the rural outskirts to fund progressive programs like Zumba classes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Spears also pointed to local politics as a reason for Republicans to get out and vote, urging the audience to make sure their friends \u201cknow how crazy these progressives can get \u2014 and what they\u2019re going to do to our state if we let them [into leadership].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paxton, for his part, spent most of his 15-minute speech talking about Talarico, a 37-year-old state lawmaker who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/james-talarico-us-senate-race-2026-san-antonio-event\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/james-talarico-us-senate-race-2026-san-antonio-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">taught school in San Antonio<\/a> before his career in politics, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/07\/20\/texas-senate-talarico-paxton-fundraising-spending-money-donors\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/07\/20\/texas-senate-talarico-paxton-fundraising-spending-money-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">is now vastly outraising him<\/a> in the U.S. Senate race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paxton called him a vegan who hates cattle and Texas barbecue, gets paid to advise schools on \u201cwoke\u201d policies, and hates the oil and gas industry \u2014 all characterizations Talarico has sought to rebut.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SAReport-Ken-Paxton-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5449417\"  \/>District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears talks to a packed house of supporters of Ken Paxton, candidate for U.S. Senate, at the Angry Elephant on Saturday Aug. 8.
