(Library of Congress)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1888: <\/strong>Jimmy Ryan is the only Chicago Cub to hit for the cycle twice. Against the Detroit Black Sox on July 28, 1888, Ryan came up to bat six times, had <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jimmy-ryan-hit-for-the-c\/169408989\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jimmy-ryan-hit-for-the-c\/169408989\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four hits<\/a>\u00a0and an average of .833.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jimmy-ryan-hits-for-the\/169409432\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jimmy-ryan-hits-for-the\/169409432\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did it again<\/a>\u00a0on July 1, 1891, against Cleveland.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"N1q5ppN2gu\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/04\/03\/vintage-chicago-tribune-chicago-cubs-mlb-rare-feats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Chicago Cubs who have hit for the cycle<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe day was one continual and lovely picture for Jimmy Ryan,\u201d the Tribune reported. \u201cHe went to the bat five times and only one chance for a hit escaped. He commenced with a screaming single in the first; this he followed with a home run over the left wall; then he retrograded some, and his next effort was only a three-bagger. He wound up finally with a drive for two bases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Tribune editorial cartoonist John T. McCutcheon publicized the demise of Lincoln Park Zoo elephant Deed-a-Day with a July 7, 1943, front-page cartoon under the headline &quot;The scum of creation&quot; ridiculing those who fed broken glass, bottle caps, rubber balls and more to Deed-a-Day. McCutcheon publicized the demise of Lincoln Park Zoo elephant Deed-a-Day with a July 7, 1943, front-page cartoon \u2014 under the headline \u201cThe scum of creation\u201d \u2014 ridiculing those who fed broken glass, bottle caps, rubber balls and more to Deed-a-Day. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1942:<\/strong> Gifted to the zoo in 1924 by Chicago Boy Scouts who collected pennies to buy her, 25-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-elephant-deed-a-day-de\/163271865\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deed-a-Day<\/a> \u2014 Lincoln Park Zoo\u2019s second elephant \u2014 had been suffering from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-elephant-seriously-ill-a\/163271947\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspected stomach ailment<\/a>. After she was put down, it was discovered she \u201cdied from trash fed to it by a doting public.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fZJDgYhJT2\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/04\/15\/chicago-white-sox-pitchers-have-thrown-20-no-hitters-since-1902-including-3-perfect-games-relive-them-all-here\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago White Sox pitchers have thrown 20 no-hitters since 1902 \u2014 including 3 perfect games. Relive them all here.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> Francisco Barrios and Blue Moon Odom posted the only <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-odom-barrios-share-no-h\/177426102\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">combined no-hitter<\/a> in Chicago White Sox history.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Dick Butkus played for the Bears from 1965-73, making seven Pro Bowl teams. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Butkus died Thursday at age 80. (Steve Lasker\/Chicago Today)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>Butkus played nine seasons for the Bears, starting all 119 games he played. He was named first-team All-Pro five times and second-team once and he was voted to the Pro Bowl after his first eight seasons. He\u2019s the Bears\u2019 all-time leader with 27 fumble recoveries.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"VpHSqj66Cr\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/10\/05\/he-was-chicagos-son-dick-butkus-the-hall-of-fame-bears-linebacker-known-for-his-toughness-dies-at-80\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018He was Chicago\u2019s son\u2019: Dick Butkus, the Hall of Fame Bears linebacker known for his toughness, dies at 80<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-stevie-wonder-bows-out-o\/162645660\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stevie Wonder<\/a> backed out of ChicagoFest, the precursor to Taste of Chicago, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/10\/07\/highlights-in-the-life-of-rev-jesse-jackson-minister-civil-rights-advocate-politician-intermediary-social-justice-proponent-and-covid-19-survivor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Rev. Jesse Jackson<\/a> called for a Black boycott of the event.
