The reigning Liga MX champion recently added the Campe\u00f3n de Campeones title and has won five of its last six competitive matches. New York City FC, meanwhile, is enjoying a strong run of form of its own and will look to capitalize once again on home-field advantage.&#8217;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st meeting between the two sides<\/li>\n<li>Record at Leagues Cup: Cruz Azul (6-5), New York City FC (6-5).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cruz Azul<\/strong>:\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>New York City FC<\/strong>:\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Cruz Azul seems to have put its recent Leagues Cup woes behind them with a good win to kickoff the 2026 tournament.<\/li>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 Paradela needed just three minutes to become the star of Cruz Azul&#8217;s debut. The Argentine scored the only goal against Philadelphia from outside the box and continues to be one of the most important players in Cruz Azul&#8217;s current good run of form.<\/li>\n<li>New York City FC also started with authority. Tayvon Gray and Nico Cavallo scored in the second half to give Pascal Jansen&#8217;s side a 2-0 victory over Santos Laguna and their first three points of the tournament.<\/li>\n<li>Matt Freese was once again crucial for NYCFC in goal. The American goalkeeper kept a clean sheet against Santos and will be a key player against a Cruz Azul side that has scored in each of its last five official matches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cruz Azul<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Jos\u00e9 Paradela is in great form. In addition to the game-winning goal against Philadelphia, the Argentine scored twice in the 3-1 victory over Toluca in the Campe\u00f3n de Campeones match.<\/li>\n<li>La M\u00e1quina has demonstrated its ability to win matches in various ways. They overcame deficits against Atl\u00e9tico de San Luis and Puebla, defeated Toluca in a championship match, and protected an early lead against Philadelphia.<\/li>\n<li>Kevin Mier and the Cruz Azul defense also performed well in their debut. Philadelphia pressed for an equalizer for much of the match, but Cruz Azul managed to keep a clean sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>New York City FC<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Nicol\u00e1s Fern\u00e1ndez is one of the main threats for the New York side. The Argentine has been one of NYCFC&#8217;s most productive players this season and arrives as a key piece in Pascal Jansen&#8217;s attack.<\/li>\n<li>The youth also delivered against Santos as defenders Tayvon Gray and Nico Cavallo scored goals, demonstrating that NYCFC can find solutions beyond its attacking players.<\/li>\n<li>Playing at Sports Illustrated Stadium is once again an advantage for NYCFC. The team will play all three of its Phase One matches there and already capitalized on the first with a victory and a clean sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n      WHAT TO EXPECT?<\/p>\n<p>Both teams enter the match with confidence and little room for error. A second victory would put either side in a strong position heading into its final Phase One match and leave it within touching distance of securing a place in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz Azul has shown a much more mature side than in its previous Leagues Cup appearances. La M\u00e1quina is capable of controlling matches through possession, but has also demonstrated the ability to absorb pressure and protect a lead when the situation demands it.<\/p>\n<p>New York City FC, meanwhile, will look to make the most of its home-field advantage and extend its strong run of form, fueled in part by the growing influence of several young players. Against Santos Laguna, NYCFC showed patience in breaking down a match that remained scoreless at halftime before finding the breakthrough with two second-half goals.<\/p>\n<p>The two squads, however, are built quite differently. Cruz Azul boasts a roster filled with established stars, experienced players and several key contributors in excellent form. NYCFC, on the other hand, relies on a much younger core.
