We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 eRQajs\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/harry-potter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Potter<\/a> fans forced a \u00a3430m energy project to divert plans for a giant pipeline away from a Welsh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/beach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beach<\/a> in order to protect the resting place of fictional house elf Dobby. <\/p>\n<p>Fan-favourite Dobby died in the film series\u2019s penultimate entry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/nicola-sturgeon-jk-rowling-fringe-b3029765.html\" title=\"Nicola Sturgeon claims Harry Potter author JK Rowling is \u2018obsessed\u2019 with her\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows &#8211; Part One<\/a> and the scene in which he was laid to rest was filmed on the popular Freshwater West beach in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/pembrokeshire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pembrokeshire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the grave has become a shrine to the character, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/climate-change\/news\/harry-potter-dobby-deathly-hallows-b2216938.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with fans leaving tributes to him<\/a>, including many painted stones.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s been revealed that its presence and mass following has led to the diversion of a sizeable energy project called Greenlink.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1244562286...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The beach has become a shrine to Dobby\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The beach has become a shrine to Dobby (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The beach was to be the site for a connector for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/pipeline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pipeline<\/a> to carry solar and wind power to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/republic-of-ireland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Republic of Ireland<\/a> from the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The initial plan placed Greenlink\u2019s British end at the beach, with the other side of the cable landing in Wexford.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on The Energy Revolution podcast released on Wednesday, Simon Ludlam, chief executive of advisory firm Etchea Energy, who served as director of the project, recalled how the plans led to outcry from Harry Potter fans. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we\u2019d agreed with all the authorities, with all the landowners and the people who own the beach, the local residents, how we\u2019d make landfall, I remember BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wales\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wales<\/a> said, \u2018Could you come down and just do a quick thing,\u2019\u201d Mr Ludlam said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1244562854...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A memorial for Dobby, a fictional house elf from the Harry Potter fantasy novels and films, at Freshwater West beach\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>A memorial for Dobby, a fictional house elf from the Harry Potter fantasy novels and films, at Freshwater West beach (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The BBC interview resulted in hundreds of phone calls from furious fans, angered that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/dobby-harry-potter-elf-memorial-b2071307.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cable would go \u201cstraight through Dobby\u2019s grave\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ludlam continued: \u201cAnd so my colleague Tom, who works in permitting, said, \u2018Simon, we\u2019re going to have to respond to these calls.\u2019 And I said, \u2018well, Tom, I\u2019m super busy.\u2019 And he goes, \u2018no, no, we really have to respond to this\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018Well, Tom, what are they on about?\u2019\u201d. On being informed the outcry was over the cable going through Dobby\u2019s grave, Ludlam said: \u201cDobby?
