{"id":991025,"date":"2026-08-09T12:48:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T12:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/991025\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T12:48:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T12:48:21","slug":"video-of-niewiadoma-and-gery-fuels-tour-de-france-femmes-ethics-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/991025\/","title":{"rendered":"Video of Niewiadoma and Gery Fuels Tour de France Femmes Ethics Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Updated August 9, 2026 04:17AM<\/p>\n<p>What really happened between <a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/kasia-niewiadoma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kasia Niewiadoma<\/a> and C\u00e9lia Gery on stage 8 of the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/tour-de-france-femmes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the question that rattled around the cycling world Saturday night after the race for the yellow jersey was blown open by <a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/tour-de-france-femmes\/niewiadoma-blasts-vollerings-team-as-childish-after-losing-yellow-alleges-improper-tactics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">incendiary accusations<\/a> and grey area tactics.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/demi-vollering\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Demi Vollering<\/a>\u2019s yellow jersey coup Saturday in Nice became a subplot when Niewiadoma insisted she was \u201cblocked\u201d out of following a crucial attack by the Dutchwoman\u2019s young teammate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGery on purpose just blocked me to the barriers where I had to stop pedaling,\u201d Niewiadoma claimed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they want to compete, they should compete fair play and not look for me to close me in the barriers,\u201d Niewiadoma said at the finish line of Saturday\u2019s stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like it\u2019s so childish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Vollering defended her young teammate Gery <a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/tour-de-france-femmes\/vollering-hits-back-at-niewiadomas-claim-about-teammate-thats-bike-racing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in her post-race conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their FDJ-United Suez manager Lars Boom added that the 20-year-old was following standard racing strategy. What did or didn\u2019t happen was no dirty misdeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cC\u00e9lia says she didn\u2019t do anything wrong,\u201d Boom told <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wielerflits.be\/nieuws\/lars-boom-ziet-meesterplan-slagen-de-meiden-voerden-het-perfect-uit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wielerflits<\/a>. \u201cI told her to stay in Demi\u2019s wheel until after the turn and then quietly drop a hole. I think that was a very good idea and I think it happened that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to look back closely at the images, but it is not in C\u00e9lia\u2019s nature to drive someone into the fences,\u201d he continued. \u201cShe will never do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what images were there for Boom to look back at?<\/p>\n<p>Fan footage opens up the broadcasting blind spot<br \/>\n<img alt=\"Tour de France Femmes\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"932\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1002056 size-large\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Z8A_6962-e1786262406241-1200x932.jpg\"\/>Gery, Vollering, and Niewiadoma-Phinney rattled into the decisive left-hand bend at full speed.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s incident occurred in a broadcasting blind spot.<\/p>\n<p>Cameras tracked the peloton speeding into a crucial left-hand bend at 6.5km to go until the leaders were obscured by tree cover.<\/p>\n<p>When producers switched to a front-on view from the lead moto, \u201ccontroversy corner\u201d went unseen.<\/p>\n<p>Videos that later emerged from <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ammattipyoraily\/status\/2086157296690717025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2086157296690717025%7Ctwgr%5E8b0d3b9bd57035a49061742f83050aabb08ce109%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cyclingnews.com%2Fpro-cycling%2Fwomens-cycling%2Fif-shes-on-demis-wheel-she-gets-over-the-top-and-nothing-changes-on-gc-kasia-niewiadoma-phinney-loses-yellow-as-complaint-about-gery-goes-nowhere-at-tour-de-france-femmes%2F\" rel=\"nofollow\">French broadcasts<\/a> shed a little clarity on the left-hander that might prove decisive to the outcome of the Tour de France Femmes.<\/p>\n<p>However, video posted to X by <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/pjbouten\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cPJ Bouten\u201d<\/a> provides a front-row view of the action. They were stood filming in prime position at the exit of the bend.<\/p>\n<p>Their short reel shows Vollering blasting through in first wheel. Niewiadoma and French champion G\u00e9ry are shoulder to shoulder a half wheel behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Gery has the inside line; Niewiadoma is approaching wide.<\/p>\n<p>Gery\u2019s racing line through the bend pushes Niewiadoma close to the gutter. The video shows Niewiadoma briefly freewheeling to check her line, losing Vollering\u2019s wheel in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Was Gery intentionally impeding Niewiadoma? Who knows.<\/p>\n<p>Was it illegal? The UCI jury said \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no mention of the incident in the post-race communique.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I was at the bottom of the final climb.  Kasia did lose her balance when coming out of the corner and had to touch her brakes.  There were no barriers, only pavement.  It didn\u2019t feel like she was deliberately hindered by Gery. The legality and ethics of any intentional move by Gery was debated across every social platform available.<\/p>\n<p>But the peloton is a mass of dark arts tactics that blur every line possible.<\/p>\n<p>Opening gaps to a teammate to allow them room to attack, squeezing rivals into sub-optimal lines \u2013 it\u2019s all fair game in a sport of grey areas.<\/p>\n<p>Kasia\u2019s husband<a target=\"_self\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/taylor-phinney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Taylor Phinney<\/a> knows the subtle arts of bike racing all too well. The U.S. road and track legend spent a decade in the WorldTour before he retired in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>He piled in to the debate Saturday by sharing some damning comments on his <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"article-content-link text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/taylorphinney\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram stories.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis person\u2019s job on the front is done. Imagine a sprinter\u2019s lead-out rider doing the same thing? Kasia gets the speed on the outside, yet Gery pedals to push her out, closing the exit of the corner and forcing Kasia to brake,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this cycling? Yea it is. Is it illegal? I don\u2019t think so. Is it dirty riding? To me, yes. Resembles something petty you would see in a junior race or a parking lot crit, not a move you\u2019d expect from one of the world\u2019s best teams in the biggest bike race of the year,\u201d Phinney wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Kasia\u201d acknowledged he brings inherent bias to the debate but was clear on his stance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stand with K, obviously,\u201d Phinney wrote. \u201cYes, it\u2019s true this is cycling, and people can ride how they want, race with respect for other riders or not. I met many riders who rode without respect in my day. The peloton remembers who races with class and who does not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another twist in the most dramatic Tour de France Femmes to date<br \/>\n<img alt=\"Demi Vollering\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1002021\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Z8B_2198-1200x750.jpg\"\/>Vollering seized the yellow jersey Saturday night just 100km from the end of the Tour de France Femmes. (Photo: Gruber Images)<\/p>\n<p>None of the riders and teams involved in the incident have issued any further statements since those shared with the press Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>UCI jurors have not adjusted their non-stance on the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The debate over what happened in that crucial corner and whether it was fair will rage on for months.
