Kritdanai \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>And these newcomers to adulthood are left holding the bag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oft-maligned\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/22\/lifestyle\/gen-z-whines-about-lazy-worker-label-in-workplace-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">as \u201clazy,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0skittish brats with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/20\/lifestyle\/gen-zs-most-guilty-of-faking-productivity-at-work-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">zero work ethic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/21\/lifestyle\/gen-z-going-into-debt-losing-friends-to-avoid-asking-for-repayment-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">deplorable money-management\u00a0<\/a>skills, Zoomers, age 29 and under, are now the second-most prominent demographic in the \u201csandwich generation\u201d index, according to a new report <a href=\"https:\/\/myguidetoretirement.org\/family-financial-support-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">via MyGuideToRetirement.org<\/a>, a family and financial planning hub.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/16\/lifestyle\/majority-of-adults-caring-for-their-parents-say-it-helps-heal-their-relationships-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sandwich generation<\/a>, comprised of adults caring for their fledgling broods as well as their elderly mothers and fathers, is currently dominated by millennials (46%), folks in their 30s and early 40s, with a surprising 39% of Gen Zers trailing closely behind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tragically, the burden of being the breadwinner \u2014 covering grocery bills, rent and housing expenses, medical fees and subscriptions, health insurance, and in-home care or assisted living costs \u2014 is taking its toll on Gen Z\u2019s soul (and savings).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Young adults in the \u201csandwich generation\u201d are prematurely tapping into their retirement funds in order to support their growing families and aging parents, according to the findings.  KMPZZZ \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Z, in particular, carries an unusually heavy emotional burden for their age,\u201d wrote study authors, who surveyed over 1,000 US earners to determine the mental and monetary weight of providing for relatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that 75% of Z\u2019s feel \u201cemotionally responsible for helping a loved one,\u201d the highest rate of any generation, with 76% frequently racked with stress about their personal finances due to these family obligations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But dipping into their nest eggs to make ends meet could ultimately make matters worse for the ever-anxious bunch, warn the findings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNearly a third of Gen Z adults (30%) said they have already withdrawn money from a retirement account because of family responsibilities,\u201d said the experts.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s more than millennials (22%), twice the rate of Gen X (11%), and over three times the number of baby boomers (6%) who\u2019ve done the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A majority of Gen Z admitted feeling overwhelmed with stress and anxiety due to the financial demands of their families.   Daniels C\/peopleimages.com \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZoomers might feel that early withdrawals are no big deal, as they have many working years ahead of them,\u201d continued the insiders. \u201cThis leads them to assume they\u2019ll be able to replenish the accounts later on without consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut early withdrawals can create some of the most severe long-term damage because they prevent decades of potential compound growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without substantial savings, Gen Zers will be forced to delay retirement and postpone financial milestones such as debt repayment, building emergency funds and purchasing a home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs costs continue to rise, the tension between supporting loved ones today and securing stability tomorrow is becoming harder for households to ignore,\u201d say the pros.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adult children taking care of their elderly moms and dads often help cover grocery bills, rent and housing needs, healthcare costs and assisted living expenses, per the study.
