NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d<\/a> continued its blistering pace in theaters, collecting $144.5 million domestically over its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, while Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d set a new high for the director. <\/p>\n

The Sony-Marvel release has accrued $1.67 billion worldwide in just 10 days of release, putting it on a trajectory to be among the biggest blockbusters ever. Domestically, no movie has wracked up a higher total faster. In U.S. and Canadian cinemas, \u201cBrand New Day\u201d has grossed $655.1 million thus far. Overseas, it\u2019s already surpassed $1 billion. <\/p>\n

It took only seven days for \u201cBrand New Day\u201d to become the highest grossing movie of the year, easily displacing \u201cToy Story 5\u201d<\/a> ($1.07 billion worldwide). No Sony film has ever cleared $100 million in its second weekend before. It came close to toppling the best sophomore frame on record: \u201cThe Force Awakens,\u201d with $149.2 million in 2015.<\/p>\n

Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d<\/a> also crossed $1 billion. In its fourth weekend, the Universal Pictures release added $31.5 million domestically to bring its global total to $1.1 billion. <\/p>\n

Nolan\u2019s Homeric epic is the director\u2019s first movie to reach that threshold since 2012\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d It now ranks as Nolan\u2019s biggest box-office hit ever, not accounting for inflation, eclipsing both \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d ($1.08 billion) and 2009\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d ($1 billion). Nolan\u2019s \u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/a> ($975 million) ended just shy of the milestone. <\/p>\n

A big part of that success, of course, has been on IMAX. With $147.3 million domestically on the company\u2019s large-format screens, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d now ranks as IMAX\u2019s highest grossing domestic release of all time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Odyssey\u201d still has one major market left. It opens in China on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d have helped drive Hollywood to its best box-office year since the pandemic. Ticket sales are running 18.5% ahead of last year, according to Rentrak. There have already been five $1 billion movies \u2014 more than any year since 2019. The other two were \u201cMichael\u201d<\/a> and \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Rentrak forecasts that the overall summer theatrical revenue will reach $4 billion on Monday. That seasonal mark has long been a sign of thriving business for Hollywood. Since the pandemic, the only summer to surpass $4 billion was 2023, when \u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/a> drove ticket sales. <\/p>\n

According to Rentrak, summer revenue is just $14.8 million shy of $4 billion through Sunday. <\/p>\n

A pair of comedies tried to provide some counterprogramming to the blockbusters but made little impact. <\/p>\n

\u201cOne Night Only,\u201d<\/a> a Will Gluck-directed romantic comedy where premarital sex is outlawed except for one night a year, opened with $5.7 million. The Universal release, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, cost about $25 million to make. Reviews weren\u2019t good (46% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) but audience scores (a \u201cB+\u201d CinemaScore) were better. <\/p>\n

Coming in fourth was Fox Searchlight\u2019s \u201cSuper Troopers 3,\u201d<\/a> the third in the long-running comedy series from the comedy troupe Broken Lizard. It debuted with $4 million. <\/p>\n

Two new limited releases packed theaters. A24\u2019s \u201cTony,\u201d<\/a> starring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain<\/a>, grossed $348,955, good for one of the best screen-average openings of the year: $58,159 per theater. Mubi\u2019s \u201cTeenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,\u201d<\/a> from \u201cI Saw the TV Glow\u201d filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun<\/a>, debuted with a per-location average of $50,300 across five screens. <\/p>\n

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak:<\/p>\n

1. \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d $145 million. <\/p>\n

2. \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d $31.5 million. <\/p>\n

3. \u201cOne Night Only,\u201d $5.7 million. <\/p>\n

4. \u201cSuper Troopers 3,\u201d $4 million. <\/p>\n

5. \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d $3.9 million. <\/p>\n

6. \u201cMinions & Monsters,\u201d $3.5 million. <\/p>\n

7. \u201cMoana,\u201d $2.8 million. <\/p>\n

8. \u201cIce Cream Man,\u201d $2 million. <\/p>\n

9. \u201cThe Invite,\u201d $717,568. <\/p>\n

10.
