city pension funds into Israeli bonds \u2014 after current Comptroller Brad Lander <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/13\/us-news\/brad-lander-aids-boycott-movement-against-israel-with-withdrawal-of-bonds-adams-camp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">divested from them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When Lander took office in 2022, the pension funds of city government workers and retirees that he oversees had $39.9 million of assets in Israeli bonds.<\/p>\n<p>When the bonds matured, Lander did not reinvest in them, in effect divesting the pension funds from bonds that New York City had invested in since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36661981\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" bonds, despite it being a standard practice by the city since the 1970s Adam Gray for New York Post<\/p>\n<p>A campaign rep for Levine \u2014 Manhattan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/13\/us-news\/uniformed-fire-officers-association-endorses-mark-levine-for-nyc-comptroller\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">borough president<\/a> and the Democratic nominee for comptroller and thus likely next comptroller \u2014 said his boss will invest in Israel government bonds again if elected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a globally diversified portfolio, and that should include investments in Israel and Israel Bonds, which have paid solid dividends for 75 years,\u201d Levine had said during the June comptroller primary-race debate with rival and Brooklyn Councilman, Justin Brannan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now the only pension fund in America without that investment,\u201d Levine said at the time. \u201cI think prudent management for global diversity should include investment in those assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lander was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/09\/us-news\/nyc-comptroller-brad-lander-accused-of-divesting-pension-funds-from-israel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">criticized during his <\/a>mayoral campaign for divesting from Israeli bonds.<\/p>\n<p>Foes have noted that he and Israel-bashing socialist buddy Zohran Mamdani<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/13\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-and-brad-lander-cross-endorse-each-other-in-nyc-mayoral-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0cross-endorsed each other\u00a0<\/a>in the city\u2019s Democratic primary in June \u2014 a move that is credited with helping propel the far-left Mamdani well in front of the pack to clinch the party\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Lander recently spelled out his divestment decision in a response letter to First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro, who had ripped the divesting.<\/p>\n<p>Lander had accused prior comptrollers of investing pension funds from unionized workers in Israeli bonds for political reasons, not for prudent returns.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Apple first invested $30 million in State of Israel Bonds in 1974 under former city Comptroller Harrison Goldin through its pension funds for educators.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision to invest only in Israel bonds, when the funds held no other country\u2019s bonds,<br \/>and to invest assets intended for short-term cash management in longer-term bond instruments, was a political decision, not a fiduciary one,\u201d Lander said in his July 13 letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City\u2019s pension fund holdings of Israel bonds amounted to $39,947,160 at the time I took office in January 2022. In January 2023, those bonds matured, and our office was faced with the choice of whether or not to purchase new ones. We consulted our guidelines and made the prudent decision to follow them, and therefore not to continue investing in the sovereign debt of just one country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lander, who is Jewish and a self-described Zionist, added, \u201cTo summarize: We treat investments in Israel as we treat investments in any other country. No better, and no worse. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions] Movement asks investors to treat Israel worse than other countries; I oppose this effort. You appear to be asking that the City\u2019s pension funds treat Israel better than all other countries. That would also be politically motivated, and inconsistent with fiduciary duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>He then accused Mayor Eric Adams of using the city\u2019s divestment of Israeli bonds as a \u201ccynical ploy\u201d in his desperate re-election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>But Lander\u2019s predecessor as comptroller, Scott Stringer, said Lander was out of line for claiming that Israeli bonds are not a worthy investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrad got busted for BDS\u2019ing the pension system.
