about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/breast-cancer\/about\/how-common-is-breast-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">30% of all new female cancers<\/a>\u00a0annually and affecting more than 320,000 people this year alone.<\/p>\n<p>A piece of wearable technology, though, could hold the key to earlier detection for one of the most common and deadliest cancers for women, giving new meaning to an underwired bra.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.8962963;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40260452\" stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>While mammograms are the standard way to get checked for cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/09\/breast-cancer-screenings-should-begin-at-40-not-50-health-alert\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">starting at age 40<\/a> and recommended every year, earlier detection is oftentimes better for those who are high risk.<\/p>\n<p>More wearable devices, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/14\/wearable-device-with-ai-could-allow-for-at-home-breast-cancer-screenings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">miniaturized AI ultrasound scanner,<\/a> are being created to detect breast cancer tumors in the early stages and create more accessible diagnostic methods in between mammograms.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a French-Swiss research team is seeing promising results from a \u201csmart bra\u201d equipped with thermal sensors and artificial intelligence to screen for early signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The PHI-BRA smart bra system is a non-invasive device worn for 30 minutes using skin surface thermography to track changes in breast tissue temperature.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8385218\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">increase in temperature<\/a> can signal increased blood flow caused by a developing tumor or cancerous breast tissue.<\/p>\n<p>The bra also uses surface electrodes for <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37061594\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">electrical impedance spectroscopy<\/a> (EIS), a way to measure cell structure frequency, as breast tumors have different structures.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40260451\" width=\"885\" stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>This combination of thermography and electrical impedance can measure both metabolic activity through the surface and tissue structural properties.<\/p>\n<p>Data collected is then analyzed by artificial intelligence methods to check for any suspicious heat patterns.<\/p>\n<p>The AI can also take into account any uncertainty in measurements, which allows for any anomalies to be located.<\/p>\n<p>While not a direct replacement for mammogram screenings, the bra could serve as an additional and more accessible screening method in between doctor\u2019s visits.<\/p>\n<p>Although mammograms aren\u2019t generally recommended until women hit 40, cases of life-threatening breast cancer are spiking among younger women.<\/p>\n<p>Metastatic breast cancer \u2014 in which breast cancer cells have spread from the local area of the breast to another site of the body \u2014 increased by 3% from 2004 to 2021 among patients aged 20 to 39.<\/p>\n<p>The PHI-BRA isn\u2019t the first wearable device to catch cancer early, as researchers at MIT created a device that attaches to a bra and takes images of breast tissue with ultrasound technology.<\/p>\n<p>The technology recorded the images of the breast tissue, which displayed cysts as small as 0.3 centimeters in diameter\u00a0<strong>\u2014\u00a0<\/strong>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/breast-cancer\/understanding-a-breast-cancer-diagnosis\/stages-of-breast-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">size of tumors at early stages<\/a> of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers plan to use artificial intelligence\u00a0to analyze the ultrasound images and make diagnostic recommendations, adding it could be three or four years before the device is available to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, clinical trials of the PHI-BRA Smart Bra are still underway while the team looks to further expand their research and
