But sweltering subways have been an issue for years, nearing or topping 100 degrees at different stations during the summer throughout the five boroughs.

So where would all that heat go? To nearby buildings in the winter.

In lower Manhattan, the Dinkins Municipal Building has a $1.5 million winter heating bill. But city officials say that cost would go way down if a steamy subway station transfers its heat to nearby offices.

“NYC had an opportunity to take a problem and turn it into a resource,” said NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

The excess subway heat would be stored beneath an unused Chambers Street platform.

“It may sound like science fiction but I promise it’s not,” said NYC Commissioner of Administrative Services Yume Kitasei.

While commuters may be skeptical the plan will cool off platforms anytime soon, the event did cool off a simmering disagreement between the MTA chairman and the mayor over Mamdani’s plan to make buses free. That issue was on a back burner Monday.

“Look, I mean the two of us are New Yorkers and that means we are never gonna agree on every single topic that comes to us,” Mamdani said when asked if the launch event was proof he and Lieber were cool, so to speak.

“I agree with the mayor,” said Lieber.

As for a timeline of when the plan could go into place, the city hopes to get things going in 2027.

Inside a crumbling subway station mocked by City Hall — Mayor Zohran Mamdani said “the Chambers Street station…

[5122
5229,9904,405,403,5226,5225,5228,5227,38598,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
post-993989","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york","tag-america","tag-mta","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-newyork","tag-newyorkcity","tag-ny","tag-nyc","tag-nyc-subway","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
