{"id":994079,"date":"2026-08-11T09:08:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T09:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/994079\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T09:08:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T09:08:16","slug":"encinitas-father-continues-to-fight-for-safer-roads-after-daughters-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/994079\/","title":{"rendered":"Encinitas father continues to fight for safer roads after daughter&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The father of Emery Chalekian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/pedestrian-hit-killed-by-vehicle-encinitas\/3812199\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 12-year-old girl who was killed while crossing Encinitas Boulevard<\/a>, returned to the Encinitas Mobility and Traffic Safety Commission on Monday to make an emotional plea for changes aimed at slowing traffic.<\/p>\n<p>John Chalekian was surrounded by supporters at the meeting, including several members of Safe Streets Encinitas, a group formed after his daughter\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen people spoke during public comment, with most calling on the commission to make additional physical changes to Encinitas roads to slow traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Safe Streets Encinitas and the Chalekian family are continuing their efforts to get the commission to commit to a Vision Zero strategy. Over the past 10 years, Encinitas has had a pedestrian killed on its streets every eight and a half months.<\/p>\n<p>One speaker questioned whether eliminating traffic deaths is a realistic goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo achieve zero is a good goal to have it is impossible and irresponsible.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Chalekian said he plans to continue pushing for changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime and pressure break all big rocks and that\u2019s the bottom line. Unfortunately we are in a position where we don\u2019t have a sense of urgency. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Safe Streets Encinitas says the city is considering changing the name of the corner where Emery was killed to help promote safety awareness.<\/p>\n<p>This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC San Diego.
