{"id":995221,"date":"2026-08-12T02:23:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T02:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/995221\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T02:23:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T02:23:20","slug":"israel-and-venezuela-renew-consular-relations-for-first-time-since-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/995221\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel and Venezuela renew consular relations for first time since 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Israel and Venezuela announced on Tuesday that they had renewed consular relations, 17 years after diplomatic ties were severed between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar and his Venezuelan counterpart F\u00e9lix Plasencia agreed to renew consular ties after talks in recent weeks \u201cresulted in an agreement to establish a coordination mechanism that will enable the provision of consular services to citizens of both countries,\u201d Sa\u2019ar\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries have not had any sort of diplomatic relations since 2009.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth governments recognize the importance of the relationship between the State of Israel and the Jewish community in Venezuela, which constitutes an important historic bridge of friendship between the two countries,\u201d Venezuela\u2019s government said in a statement, which was also issued by Israel\u2019s Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>It added that the two countries agreed to \u201ccontinue their bilateral technical cooperation stemming from the emergency response and reconstruction efforts following the double earthquake\u201d in June.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Venezuela severed diplomatic relations with Israel under then-president Hugo Ch\u00e1vez in 2009, amid deteriorating relations between Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s government and Israel and a few days after the start of an IDF operation in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3a41d679-3e6d-4fc9-9fe8-e92243eedf99.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3865995\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3a41d679-3e6d-4fc9-9fe8-e92243eedf99-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tVenezuela\u2019s acting President Delcy Rodriguez center, meeting with Israeli representatives in a photo released on July 22, 2026. (IDF Spokesperson)<\/p>\n<p>But since Delcy Rodr\u00edguez was installed as the country\u2019s president after the United States captured the previous leader, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, in January, officials have sharply changed their tone regarding the Jewish state.<\/p>\n<p>Ties have also warmed since Israel sent humanitarian assistance following the earthquake. An Israeli aid delegation was dispatched to Venezuela, which provided professional assistance to the country\u2019s emergency response and recovery efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In comments a month ago, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/pm-hails-israeli-aid-team-for-rebuilding-relations-with-venezuela-after-17-years-of-severed-ties\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hailed Israel\u2019s<\/a> humanitarian delegation to Venezuela, saying at the time that it was also contributing to \u201crebuilding relations\u201d with Caracas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are rebuilding ruins, and you are also rebuilding relations.
