SOUTH CAROLINA<\/strong> – Breton, a 1,400-pound great white shark, is catching attention as he makes big moves heading north in the Atlantic, trailing behind other white sharks of the season.<\/p>\n

This adult white shark has been tracked by OCEARCH since September 2020, when he was tagged off Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n

Breton has traveled all up and down the East Coast and up into Atlantic Canada<\/a> in the almost six years since his tagging.<\/p>\n

Breton the shark being released in 2020 after his evaluation and tagging.<\/p>\n

He’s gone out deep into the Atlantic and come relatively close to shore.<\/p>\n

Now, after a brief stint hanging out off the coast of Florida<\/a> while other white sharks made their way up the coast into cooler waters, Breton is finally following.<\/p>\n

After his latest satellite ping on Monday, Breton was about 70 miles off the coast of South Island, South Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That currently makes him the southernmost white shark tracked by OCEARCH in the western North Atlantic, the nonprofit said on Monday.<\/p>\n

Most other white sharks on the global shark tracker<\/a> are up in Atlantic Canada at this point in the season, where there are cooler waters and more abundant food choices.<\/p>\n

“Sharks don’t always follow the rulebook,” OCEARCH Senior Data Scientist John Tyminski said after Breton’s brief break off Florida in late July. “Breton’s unexpected journey reminds us that the factors driving white shark movements are complex, and we’re still uncovering the secrets behind these remarkable migrations.”<\/p>\n
