Here’s a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on Aug. 12, according to the Tribune’s archives.<\/p>\n

Email us<\/a>.<\/p>\n Flashback:<\/strong> Aug. 12, 1994<\/p>\n 1994:<\/strong> Major League Baseball players went on strike<\/a> to protest a salary cap proposed by management to control costs. On Sept. 14, 1994 \u2014 after 34 days of limited negotiations \u2014 acting Commissioner Bud Selig canceled<\/a> the remainder of the season, including the playoffs and the World Series. As the strike stretched one day longer than the 131-day season had, last-ditch talks broke off and the owners imposed the salary cap<\/a>.<\/p>\n The strike finally ended<\/a> in early April 1995, after 232 days, which made it the longest in the league’s history. Games resumed April 26, 1995<\/a>.<\/p>\n Weather records <\/strong>(from the National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n High temperature: 101 degrees<\/strong> (1918)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Low temperature: 47 degrees<\/strong> (1982)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Precipitation: 2.03 inches<\/strong> (1908)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n 1933:<\/strong>\u00a0The Century of Progress World’s Fair celebrated Black people with\u00a0“National Negro Day.”<\/a>\u00a0The festivities started with a parade down 14th Street just before entering Soldier Field.<\/p>\n Seven years later, the\u00a0American Negro Exposition<\/a>\u00a0showcased Black people’s accomplishments in the 75 years since “Juneteenth” \u2014 the day in 1865, June 19, when a Union general announced in Texas that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed the state’s enslaved African Americans.<\/p>\n 1963:<\/strong> University of Chicago student Bernie Sanders<\/a>, then 21, was charged with resisting arrest during an Aug. 12, 1963, demonstration<\/a> in Englewood \u2014 along with comedian Dick Gregory and 54 others \u2014 against the use of mobile classrooms in the city’s public schools.<\/p>\n Bernie Sanders and the Willis wagon protests of 1963<\/a><\/p>\n Chicago Public Schools Superintendent Benjamin Willis refused to allow Black children to be bused from their crowded neighborhood schools to those in white areas with more resources. That’s why the portable classroom trailers were nicknamed “Willis wagons”<\/a> and became symbolic of the city’s long struggle over segregated education.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: Bernie Sanders, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. protest against ‘Willis wagons’ in schools<\/a><\/p>\n Demonstrations against Willis wagons were a precursor to a more sweeping Civil Rights Movement in Chicago that drew the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to the city in 1966 \u2014 the same year Willis resigned.<\/p>\n Mobile classrooms began to be phased out of Chicago schools in the 1970s, but photographic proof<\/a> of Sanders’ participation in the 1963 Englewood protest wouldn’t be discovered in the Tribune archives until decades later \u2014 when he was a Democratic presidential hopeful.<\/p>\n 1966:<\/strong> About 13,000 fans saw The Beatles’ last concert in Chicago<\/a> at the International Amphitheatre.<\/p>\n 1990:<\/strong> The vehicle of a dinosaur-hunting crew planning to leave a site in western South Dakota at the end of an expedition was found to have a\u00a0flat tire<\/a>. While others went into town to make the repair, Sue Hendrickson, a member of that crew, decided to have a look in an area the expedition had not searched. It was a good choice.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: Sue the T. rex’s journey to the Field Museum<\/a><\/p>\n While examining a cliff’s side, she discovered a Tyrannosaurus rex specimen \u2014 the largest, most complete and best preserved T. rex found to that date.<\/p>\n The dinosaur skeleton \u2014 which was estimated to be 90% complete \u2014 became known as Sue not because of its sex (undetermined) but after its finder.<\/p>\n The Field Museum won the dinosaur fossil for $8.36 million<\/a> during an eight-minute auction held Oct. 4, 1997.<\/p>\n 1994:<\/strong> Kenneth Hansen<\/a> was charged with the October 1955 murders of three boys \u2014 brothers John, 13, and Anton Schuessler, 11 and their friend Robert Peterson, 14. The three boys went to the Loop to watch a movie and were picked up by Hansen while hitchhiking home.<\/p>\n Hansen, serving a 200-year sentence for the slayings, died in prison<\/a> of natural causes in 2007.<\/p>\n 2014: <\/strong>The body of Chicagoan Sheila von Wiese-Mack<\/a>, 62, was found inside a bloodied suitcase placed in the trunk of a taxi outside the luxury St. Regis hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali.
