As The Beach Boys and The Beatles<\/a> battled it out for album supremacy in the late stages of the 1960s, it was easy to become accustomed to the truly mesmerising quality of their music. <\/p>\n As both bands traded experimental jabs, we became desensitised to the innovation at hand. Pet Sounds was a truly groundbreaking album that, 60 years on, might just be the greatest of all time, rivalled only by The Beatles\u2019 Sgt Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was ultimately written as a response.\u00a0<\/p>\n Despite happily accepting global praise as maybe the best songwriter of all time, Paul McCartney has never been shy to profess that there would be no Sgt Pepper without Pet Sounds<\/a>, recalling, \u201cI played it to John so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence. If records had a director within a band, I sort of directed [Sgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band] and my influence was basically the Pet Sounds album\u2026 I\u2019ve often played Pet Sounds and cried. It\u2019s that kind of an album for me.\u201d<\/p>\n By and large, these two records were setting the pace, pushing the album format further into the future and showing the world how symphonic arrangements can seamlessly blend with rock and roll sensibilities to create masterful pop records.\u00a0In making it look easy, they inspired a generation of copycats, musicians who thought this new style of baroque-pop was simple: put together a few sunny chord progressions and layer harmonies with psychedelic lyrics, you\u2019re there. But really, this new kaleidoscopic landscape of \u201860s colour was simply unachievable with a paint-by-numbers approach.<\/p>\n A reality that was harshly thrust upon The Cyrkle with their track \u2018Turn-Down Day\u2019. They were a band who perhaps knew The Beatles better than anyone at that time, having supported them for a number of shows in late 1966 and even being part of the bill for their final ever gig at Candlestick Park<\/a>. In fact, The Fab Four wielded such a powerful influence over them that John Lennon even convinced them to change their name from The Rhondells to The Cyrkle. <\/p>\n Within The Beatles\u2019 management circle, The Cyrkle clearly represented something of a commercial prospect, and so their famed manager Brian Epstein decided to snap them up and put them in their stable. Now they were set to be The Beatles Mark II, rolling out watered-down versions of their great psychedelic songwriting for those hungry enough to lap it up.<\/p>\n \u2018Turn-Down Day\u2019 was quite literally the sound of that model being put into action and lacked all of the authenticity because of it. While Sgt Pepper was admittedly the response to Pet Sounds, it sought to achieve it by creating something new in its own right, while \u2018Turn-Down Day\u2019 made no bones about sounding like a Sgt Pepper B-side. Even the lyrics were unashamedly straightforward, looking to cash in on the bright ethos of the hippie era. <\/p>\n The catchy title does exactly what it says on the tin, channelling a carefree, upbeat summer concept that celebrates the idea of skipping stress and heading to the beach, which really felt like a rather clunky attempt at currying favour amongst the \u201860s audience.\u00a0So it\u2019s no surprise that in 2026, we celebrate the anniversaries of Pet Sounds<\/a>, Revolver and the early stages of Sgt Pepper, for that was really the sound of a year bold in its innovation, bright in its colour and nuanced in its messaging, three ideals that \u2018Turn-Down Day\u2019 struggled to match.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
