Los Angeles loves dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere you go is crawling with dogs, and they are living their best lives. But I\u2019ve never seen one at a spa. I\u2019ve also never heard of a dog having more frequent-flier miles than some humans.<\/p>\n<p>Canines enjoy these things and more in The Times\u2019 newest series, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/lifestyle\/story\/2025-07-21\/dog-days-of-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dog Days of Summer<\/a>, in which my colleagues dig into the city\u2019s obsession with dogs and the most extravagant things L.A. humans do for their furry best friends.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the luxury world of dog wellness<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/lifestyle\/story\/2025-07-21\/dog-wellness-los-angeles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellness for dogs<\/a> mirrors the spectrum of wellness treatments for humans \u2014 be they relaxing and rejuvenating or dubious \u2014 my colleague Deborah Vankin writes.<\/p>\n<p>Deborah followed Dug the dog around for a week as he experienced L.A.\u2019s dog wellness scene, including sound baths for hounds, canine massage, \u201cpawdicures\u201d and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/newsletter\/2023-06-27\/how-reiki-taps-into-our-sense-of-connection-with-the-world-around-us-group-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiki meditation<\/a> for mutts.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"A man and a woman lie next to a dog as he relaxes during a sound bath for dogs.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753713790_817_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Jeff and Alisa Alulis join Dug as he relaxes at the Den Urban Dog Retreat moments before receiving a sound bath for dogs.<\/p>\n<p>(Robert Gauthier \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>Dug, an 8-year-old golden retriever, was chauffeured to his spa treatment in a presidential Cadillac stretch limo. While at Collar &amp; Comb in West Hollywood, he received a blueberry facial and exfoliating mud mask from the same professionals who groom the dogs of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2025-03-18\/gwyneth-paltrow-timothee-chalamet-sex-scenes-marty-supreme-intimacy-coordinator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2023-09-19\/mark-wahlberg-acting-workload-producing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Wahlberg<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2025-06-04\/dakota-johnson-celine-song-rom-com-materialists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dakota Johnson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s just on the pampering end of the spectrum. There are also vet-affiliated treatments including acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic care.<\/p>\n<p>Human-centric wellness for dogs is on the rise<\/p>\n<p>As self-care for humans becomes more popular, there are more wellness products and services being developed for dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, an increasing number of pet owners now view their dogs as children, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/thepetbuzzradioshow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPet Buzz\u201d radio show<\/a> co-host Charlotte Reed told Deborah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are worried about the world. So a lot of people are not having children \u2014 and they\u2019re treating their dogs like kids,\u201d Reed said. \u201cDogs \u2014 like kids \u2014 are a reflection of your lifestyle. If you\u2019re into health and wellness, that\u2019s what you want your dog to be into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dog wellness has its limits<\/p>\n<p>Be careful not to project your human desires onto animals that don\u2019t share the same tastes, warns <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Kennel Club<\/a> chief veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of this stuff, it\u2019s geared to the humans. But what we derive pleasure and relaxation from might create the opposite for a dog that might not want to be touched or handled. People should get their vet\u2019s opinion, always, before doing anything that might affect the dog\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But who are we kidding?
