Construction workers have broken ground on the long-delayed Tremont Avenue busway<\/a> in the Bronx, city officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The project is expected to speed up service for the nearly 40,000 people who ride the Bx36 bus along the east-west route each day, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference.<\/p>\n

The mayor said buses often traverse the stretch at less than 5 mph.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a city where time is money, the working people who rely on our bus system have repeatedly seen their precious time treated as if it does not matter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The new design will include an eastbound busway stretching from Third Avenue to Southern Boulevard; a westbound busway between Southern Boulevard and Belmont Avenue; and an offset shared eastbound bus and bike lane between Webster Avenue and Third Avenue, City Hall said in a release.<\/p>\n

Starting Sept. 19, only buses, trucks with more than six wheels, Access-A-Ride vans, emergency vehicles and bicycles will be allowed to travel the length of the corridor between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, the mayor said.<\/p>\n

Taxis and other vehicles will be able to enter the corridor from side streets, but will have to exit at the next available right turn. Stationary cameras, bus-mounted cameras and the NYPD will enforce the rules, according to the release.<\/p>\n

Mamdani said intersection safety will also be improved along the \u201cnotoriously dangerous\u201d corridor, which saw nearly 630 people injured in crashes between 2020 and 2024, including four who were killed.<\/p>\n

Painted sidewalk extensions will shorten crossing distances for pedestrians, forcing vehicles to slow down as they make turns. The project will also include new loading zones for deliveries to curb double parking.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuses will not only run faster on Tremont Avenue, they will run safer, too,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cWe anticipate that these changes will improve bus speeds by up to 60%, saving riders up to six minutes per trip, and decrease pedestrian and cyclist injuries by up to 45%.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city Department of Transportation had planned to install the busway in the spring of 2025, the mayor said, but then-Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 administration hit pause on the project<\/a>, saying it \u201cremain[ed] under review because we were informed by DOT that this project had yet to achieve the level of community support necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The busway is set to be the first one in the Bronx.<\/p>\n
