Kathy Hochul announced a $7.25 million fund that will provide legal assistance to about 1,400 unaccompanied children\u00a0in New York undergoing immigration proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>The fund\u2019s establishment follows the lapse of federal contracts that had provided unaccompanied immigrant children with legal representation for almost two decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Imagine being that little kid so scared in an unfamiliar country, missing mom and dad, not knowing much English, trying to defend yourself in a courtroom. Any parent knows that is preposterous,&#8221; Hochul told reporters in Manhattan on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said with the lapse of previous federal contracts with legal service providers, many unaccompanied children\u00a0had\u00a0lost protections while in detention centers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For those currently being held in detention centers without access to their lawyers, this means that there is no longer anyone tasked with ensuring they are healthy, they are safe and that they are protected,&#8221; Mamdani told reporters on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Check back for updates on this story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gov.
