{"id":996726,"date":"2026-08-12T20:36:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/996726\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T20:36:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:36:16","slug":"sankey-reminds-sec-schools-to-follow-ncaa-rules-amid-fifth-year-eligibility-rulings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/996726\/","title":{"rendered":"Sankey reminds SEC schools to follow NCAA rules amid fifth-year eligibility rulings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commissioner Greg Sankey wants everyone in the Southeastern Conference to move carefully when adding players suddenly allowed by court rulings to seek a fifth year of eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>Sankey sent a memo to league members on the landscape created by court filings and rulings being \u201chighly dynamic,\u201d a person familiar with the memo told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because of the volume of lawsuits, motions and courts involved.<\/p>\n<p>The memo, sent Tuesday, was first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JonRothstein\/status\/2087266042556923960?s=20\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow\">CBS Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sankey reminded SEC members that they should operate under existing NCAA rules, interpretations and applicable league rules until advised otherwise. He told them each school&#8217;s compliance office should work with SEC staff before making any commitments on a player&#8217;s eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent court rulings should not be interpreted as creating broader eligibility relief beyond the scope of the applicable orders,\u201d Sankey wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, SEC eligibility rules, including those relating to intraconference transfers, remain in effect until fully or individually waived, or the rule is changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA is appealing a preliminary injunction from a Colorado judge giving student-athletes who graduated from high school in 2022 a fifth season of eligibility for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee announced forward Jalen Washington&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/utsports.com\/news\/2026\/8\/5\/mens-basketball-vols-welcome-experienced-sec-forward-jalen-washington\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signing Aug. 5<\/a>.
