{"id":996739,"date":"2026-08-12T20:44:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/996739\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T20:44:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:44:11","slug":"houston-isd-rolls-out-teacher-performance-based-pay-system-for-2026-27-school-year-bellaire-meyerland-west-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/996739\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston ISD rolls out teacher performance-based pay system for 2026-27 school year | Bellaire &#8211; Meyerland &#8211; West University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the start of the 2026-27 school year on Aug. 10, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonisd.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston ISD<\/a> implemented its new \u201cPay-for-Performance\u201d model, which determines returning-teachers\u2019 salaries via a performance evaluation and their ranking against other district educators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pay-for-Performance <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/bellaire-meyerland-west-university\/education\/houston-isds-new-teacher-evaluation-system-to-implement-pay-for-performance-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teacher Excellence System<\/a> was approved by HISD\u2019s board of managers in March 2025, as previously reported by Community Impact. The model determines teachers salaries based on a four-category evaluation of the educator&#8217;s performance during the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>During the first year of implementation, returning-teachers\u2019 scores are based on one year of data, but in the future, pay will be based on a two-year average, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/hisdnow.houstonisd.org\/p\/~board\/district-news\/post\/hisds-new-pay-for-performance-model-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 31 news release from HISD<\/a>. Teacher salaries for the 2026-27 school year range from $70,000-$101,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p>During an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jfxLXnxiwQE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aug. 10 news conference<\/a>, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles said about 9,600 teachers began the school year with the district, leaving five open positions. During the week of Aug. 10, teachers will receive their first payout under the new system, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of that was happening prior to today and it &#8230; sets us up for success until when you see the manifestation of that work, today, in the schools, in the classrooms,\u201d Miles said Aug. 10. \u201cTo me, that&#8217;s a huge win for our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diving deeper<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As previously reported, the TES assessments will divide teachers\u2019 evaluations into four categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>45%<\/strong> of the evaluation will be based on \u201cquality of instruction\u201d such as spot and formal observations in the classroom<\/li>\n<li><strong>35%<\/strong> of the evaluation will include \u201cstudent academic outcomes\u201d and will be based on student achievement scores<\/li>\n<li><strong>15%<\/strong> of the evaluation will include \u201cplanning and professionalism,\u201d which will be based on lesson plan implementation and achieving professional expectations<\/li>\n<li><strong>5% <\/strong>of the evaluation will be based on the \u201ccampus action plan,\u201d which will cover school-wide performance indicators of success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After being evaluated, teachers will then be ranked into six categories based on where they stand compared to others, as previously reported. The distribution of teachers would be sorted into the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3%<\/strong> of teachers would receive an \u201cUnsatisfactory\u201d ranking<\/li>\n<li><strong>12%<\/strong> of teachers would receive a \u201cProgressing 1\u201d ranking<\/li>\n<li><strong>25%<\/strong> of teachers would receive a \u201cProgressing 2\u201d ranking<\/li>\n<li><strong>40%<\/strong> of teachers would receive a \u201cProficient 1\u201d ranking<\/li>\n<li><strong>12%<\/strong> of teachers would receive a \u201cProficient 2\u201d ranking<\/li>\n<li><strong>8%<\/strong> of teachers would receive a \u201cExemplary 1\u201d ranking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New HISD teachers will be paid according to years of experience, until their second year with the district, according to HISD&#8217;s news release. Starting salaries for new teachers are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$74,000 annually for teachers with more than three years of certified experience<\/li>\n<li>$70,000 for teachers with less than three years of certified experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also of note<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teachers have additional avenues for earning more money, according to HISD\u2019s news release.
