Pictured, Carrion was removed from a commission meeting in February for criticizing Judge Tim O&#8217;Hare.<\/p>\n<p>ChristineVo\/Fort Worth Report<\/p>\n<p>A Fort Worth activist was arrested one week after he and dozens of other residents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/Tarrant%20County%20judge%20orders%20courtroom%20cleared,%20removes%20former%20state%20lawmaker\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">assailed Tarrant County commissioners<\/a> over a proposal to cut the number of voting sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>EJ Carrion, host of the 817 Podcast about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/courts\/article\/fort-worth-proposes-11-25m-settlement-atatiana-22384979.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Worth<\/a>, is accused of disrupting a public meeting. Records show he was booked into the\u00a0Tarrant County jail early Wednesday morning on a $600 bond and released late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, commissioners were debating a contentious proposal to reduce the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/article\/tarrant-official-proposes-plan-midterm-voting-22380341.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Election Day voting sites<\/a> nearly in half this November, from 316 to 176. They ultimately tabled the proposal to Sept. 1 after hours of heated public testimony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Many in attendance accused Republicans of attempting to disenfranchise Democratic voters. At one point, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2021\/05\/20\/tim-ohare-ex-farmers-branch-mayor-and-southlake-families-pac-founder-running-for-tarrant-county-judge\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">County Judge Tim O\u2019Hare<\/a>, a Republican, cleared the courtroom after some in the crowd giggled when a speaker compared Texas to Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While speaking, Carrion directed an expletive at the Republican commissioners, then turned to walk out of the chamber.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Remove him immediately from the room,&#8221; O&#8217;Hare told deputies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m walking out, you small man,&#8221; Carrion replied.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/article\/tarrant-county-judge-orders-courtroom-cleared-22374154.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tarrant County judge orders courtroom cleared, removes former state lawmaker<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Deputies arrest Carrion after an hours-long Fort Worth City Council meeting, in which the city adopted a 90-day moratorium on the approval of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/energy\/article\/red-oak-data-center-boom-impacts-22232383.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data centers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lesa Pamplin, Carrion&#8217;s attorney, said O&#8217;Hare\u00a0is seeking to squash any dissent. The judge has removed speakers in the past for laughing and\u00a0clapping. O&#8217;Hare also ordered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/article\/court-meeting-tim-ohare-tarrant-county-lon-burnam-22376228.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrest of 73-year-old Lon Burnam<\/a>, a former state lawmaker, who picked up the microphone while speaking to support a previous speaker, Base Mego, who\u00a0was removed for picking up his own microphone. Mego said he has autism and trouble with public speaking and was previously granted an accommodation to hold the microphone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Burnam then lay on the ground, and deputies carried him out of the courtroom by his hands and feet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve been an activist my entire adult life, and so I knew exactly what I was doing,&#8221; Burnam said. &#8220;I thought &#8216;I\u2019m not going to put up with this,&#8217; so I just sat down on the floor with that mic and made them take it from me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the sheriff&#8217;s office said the mens&#8217; conduct met\u00a0the threshold for criminal charges for disrupting a meeting, a state misdemeanor\u00a0punishable with up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both individuals will have the opportunity to present their cases and contest the charges through the judicial process,&#8221; the sheriff&#8217;s office said.<\/p>\n<p>Burnam\u00a0said he is considering suing O\u2019Hare over the arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/article\/court-meeting-tim-ohare-tarrant-county-lon-burnam-22376228.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Former Texas lawmaker says he was prepared for his removal from Tarrant County meeting<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday,\u00a0Tarrant County District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/courts\/article\/tarrant-county-tops-texas-death-penalty-trials-22246800.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Sorrells<\/a> filed two charges against\u00a0Burnam: disrupting a meeting and hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000. In a statement, the district attorney said Burnam &#8220;chose chaos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When behavior violates the law, there are consequences, Sorrells said in a statement. &#8220;That is what this case is about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/james-talarico-gives-texas-democrats-house-22377408.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiffany Burks<\/a>, Burnam\u2019s attorney,\u00a0said the First Amendment protects the rights of citizens to petition their government and challenge elected officials. Burks is running for Tarrant County district attorney this fall against\u00a0Sorrells.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The County Judge had the authority to manage the meeting. No one disputes that,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But authority is not a blank check. Rules of decorum are meant to keep public meetings open and orderly, not silence the public&#8217;s First Amendment rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Hare and Republican commissioners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2021\/11\/18\/who-is-matt-krause-texas-lawmaker-who-launched-book-probe-has-other-jobs-that-illustrate-worldview\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Krause<\/a> and Manny Ramirez have said they wanted to reduce the number of polling places to save money. Critics, including Democratic commissioners Alisa Simmons and Roderick Miles, have accused Republicans of trying to make it more difficult to vote, particularly for low-income and Black and brown voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tarrant County has more than 1.3 million registered voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans said at the meeting they did not approve of the dramatic reduction in the number of voting sites.<\/p>\n<p>On his 817 Podcast this week, Carrion addressed the meeting and his removal from the courtroom.
