{"id":997374,"date":"2026-08-13T03:46:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T03:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/997374\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T03:46:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T03:46:23","slug":"nothings-been-done-northeast-side-neighborhood-hit-by-mailbox-break-ins-for-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/997374\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Nothing\u2019s been done\u2019: Northeast Side neighborhood hit by mailbox break-ins for months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Residents of a Northeast Side neighborhood say thieves have been prying open their community mailboxes for months, stealing bank cards, Social Security documents and packages \u2014 and they feel like no one is doing anything about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The cluster mailboxes along Sunlit Trail Drive in the Spring Meadows Ventura neighborhood show the damage: bent metal panels, crowbar marks, doors that no longer close and handwritten dates scrawled on the side \u2014 a makeshift log of every time thieves showed up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ashley, a renter in the neighborhood, said the problem has escalated sharply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s been really, really bad the last six months,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m talking about like weekly bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">She said thieves have become calculated, leaving junk mail behind while taking everything else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cEverything \u2014 from bank cards to Social Security papers,\u201d Ashley said. \u201cThey leave the junk mail. If there\u2019s one piece that everybody has, they leave that in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">One neighbor lost nearly $10,000 after his debit card was stolen from the mailbox and used to drain his bank account, according to Ashley. The bank ultimately reimbursed him. Another neighbor had a backpack filled with school supplies for her children stolen last weekend, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Emmanuel Zamora, who has lived in the neighborhood for 26 years, said the mailboxes have never had their locks changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">A few months ago, he said the post office posted a notice directly on the mailbox with a blunt message.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt said, \u2018Check your mail every day \u2014 get there before the thieves do,\u2019\u201d Zamora said. \u201cAnd that was it. Nothing\u2019s been done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Zamora said the threat goes beyond stolen packages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWhoever\u2019s doing this knows where you live,\u201d he said. \u201cThey know specifically what house you\u2019re at. Who\u2019s to say they don\u2019t know when you\u2019re not home, and they\u2019re just going to go in and break your house open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">When KSAT reached out to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, a spokesperson said the agency is \u201cnot aware of any mail theft occurring near Sunlit Trail Drive in San Antonio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ashley said she has documentation showing otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI reached out to the post office multiple times,\u201d she said. \u201cThey have to send you an email confirmation after you do a service request.
