I\u2019m 33 years old and I was surprised that I was able to make that play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I came into the dugout, I told the manager and the pitching coach, \u2018Yeah, I\u2019m surprised too.\u2019 They all gave me that look. It was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"1LWuO1FcNR\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/08\/12\/photos-chicago-white-sox-cincinnati-reds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Photos: Chicago White Sox 5, Cincinnati Reds 0<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It was one of several stellar defensive plays for the Chicago White Sox in a 5-0 victory Wednesday in front of 24,099 at Rate Field.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo was impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/08\/07\/chicago-white-sox-boston-red-sox-loss\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in his second outing<\/a> since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/08\/05\/chicago-white-sox-luis-castillo-start\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">being traded to the Sox<\/a> on Aug. 1, allowing one hit while striking out 10 and walking two over seven scoreless innings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me that\u2019s the result when you have confidence in your pitches, confidence in your plan and we had a very good plan today,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cWe executed and mixed and matched pitches and that\u2019s the result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only hit he allowed came in the first, a one-out single by Sal Stewart. Castillo and two relievers combined for a two-hitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was awesome,\u201d Venable said of the outing. \u201cIn control the whole time, just the one hit over seven innings, just outstanding. I thought he attacked the zone really well. Sanchez\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been trying a lot of stuff in the cage,\u201d Romo said. \u201cEverything is good in the cage and then I go out in the field and goes back to the way it was before. I didn\u2019t even hit before the game and I went and did that. Guess (I\u2019m) not going to hit again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meidroth, who missed the previous two games resting a \u201cbarking\u2019 left wrist, hit a two-run blast in the sixth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wrist is in good shape, I guess,\u201d Venable said with a smile. \u201cHe\u2019s put himself in a really good spot where he\u2019s on time, making good swing decisions, and we\u2019re seeing the power come out too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was plenty for Castillo. The right-hander struck out two batters in the first, second and four innings. Sanchez\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>Defensive support included a leaping grab at the wall by left fielder Tristan Peters to rob Matt McLain of an extra-base hit leading off the third inning. Second baseman Sam Antonacci made a diving stop in the outfield grass and then threw out H\u00e9ctor Rodr\u00edguez for the first out of the fifth inning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Romo) was phenomenal behind home plate,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cWe were on the same page throughout the whole game. And not just him. I also have to give credit to the defense. The guys that were behind me, they played really well. It was outstanding too. It was a good game all around for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Castillo helped his own cause with the nice fielding play on Friedl\u2019s attempt to reach on the bunt later in the fifth.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo pumped his fist after striking out Michael Toglia for the final out of the seventh, which wrapped up his 104-pitch outing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the sixth, the manager came up to me and asked me in the dugout if I was good, if I wanted one more inning,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cI said \u2018Yeah, of course.\u2019 I was looking at him like \u2018What are you talking about?\u2019 I really wanted that seventh, and it was perfect. Having a seventh inning like that, last inning, striking out the three batters was good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/08\/11\/chicago-white-sox-hagen-smith-luis-castillo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rookie Hagen Smith<\/a> walked the leadoff batter in the eighth but struck out the next three in his inning of work. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/08\/03\/huascar-brazoban-chicago-white-sox-trade-deadline\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Huascar Brazob\u00e1n<\/a> allowed a one-out hit in the ninth before retiring the next two batters to wrap up the win.
