I think we made between $7,00 to $8,000,” Moore said. “We’re hoping for that or more.”

In previous years, Moore said the event featured more than 20 different auction items/baskets.

This year they’ll have 40 different bottles of wine, all of which attendees can taste before placing a bid.

Like last year, appetizers will be provided by the Broken Yolk Cafe. Sliders, chicken wings, cheese plates and even Moore’s wife’s homemade cookies will be served.

As of July, Moore said a variety of restaurants had donated gift cards and swag for the event, including Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, Wing Stop, Taco Surf, Oscar’s Mexican Seafood, Barista Botanist, Maverick’s, Dirty Birds Bar & Grill, Cafe Athena, Flamingo and Blenders, among others.

<img decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Kiwanian Ron Walker pours wine for Patti Barnhill while Kevin Dorris, center, and Robert Chantry wait their turns during the 2024 "Wine-Down Summer" event. (Elizabeth Marie Himchak)

In addition to the food and restaurant gift cards, attendees can look forward to the fun activities and baskets that will be up for auction and raffle.

Activities up for auction include a three-night stay in Borrego Springs in a private two-bedroom casita at Rams Hill. There are also whale watching tours, semi-private surf lessons, Belmont Park tickets, Midway Museum tickets and Cygnet Theater tickets.

Auction items include an inflatable paddle board. A wine tasting class for up to 20 people hosted by Total Wine and More is a new item up for auction this year.

The money raised will be donated to groups like Mission Bay High School’s Kiwanis Key Club and music program, and Pacific Beach Middle School’s Kiwanis Builders Club.

Moore said the Kiwanis club provides Mission Bay High School’s athletic department with trophies and $1,500 scholarships to four Mission Bay High seniors.

At the local elementary schools, the Kiwanians honor students each month and they host the annual Kiwanis Hope of America Award. It is presented to two students at each of the community’s five elementary schools. The Hope of America Award recognizes students who have demonstrated academic accomplishment, leadership and good character.

Other local organizations and events the club donates to include the Pacific Beach/Taylor Library, Concerts on the Green at Kate Sessions Park and the local police and emergency service appreciation night celebration (P.A.E.S.A.N.).

Moore said he’s looking forward to seeing the community once again come together for this annual event.

“We pretty much take over the whole restaurant now,” Moore said. “It’s people coming together, mingling, getting people to meet new friends or see old friends. We have people from outside the community that might come. It’s just a nice evening to encourage people to bid up.”

Want to go?

“Wine-Down Summer” fundraiser

When: 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16

Where: Broken Yolk Cafe, 1851 Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach.

Cost: Tickets are $50.
