Chicago residents may hear loud aircraft noise throughout the weekend as performers prepare for the annual event, which organizers describe as a longstanding summer tradition that brings a unique atmosphere to the city.<\/p>\n
“You just get amped; everyone’s clapping and cheering. Everyone’s excited, and it just makes you excited, which translates to being able to have an awesome show,” said Lt. Col. Alex Prevendar, commander of the Thunderbirds.<\/p>\n
City organizers said the free event will feature a variety of attractions for attendees of all ages.<\/p>\n
“We have the Thunderbirds back this year, which is amazing, and we also have the golden knights. Those are our headliners. We have a ton of civilian performers and military performers. Then we also have some water demonstrations with CPD and CFD as well,” said Bria Purdiman, deputy commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.<\/p>\n
Among the civilian performers is Ed Hamill, a Park Ridge native flying on behalf of Folds of Honor, an organization that provides scholarships to families of fallen veterans and first responders.<\/p>\n
“I love coming home; I love the people of Chicago and flying for people of Chicago and spreading the word about Folds of Honor and what they do for the families of military and first responders,” Hamill said.<\/p>\n
Weather could play a role in this weekend’s performances after rain moved through Illinois and Indiana during the week. Organizers said they will coordinate with city officials to adjust the schedule if necessary.<\/p>\n
Prevendar said the Thunderbirds can adapt their performance based on weather conditions.<\/p>\n
“We have different shows we do. We have a high show, a low show and a flat show so it just depends on where the clouds are at and we’ll be able to fly,” he said.<\/p>\n
Pilots are scheduled to conduct practice flights Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n
Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early.<\/p>\n
