Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery are planning to release directors\u2019 cuts in theaters next year, we\u2019re told, as part of a \u201ccelebration of movies\u201d series featuring the likes of Zack Snyder, David Ayer, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, and Harry Potter.<\/p>\n

Brand new Blu-rays and collector\u2019s merch would follow the theatrical runs.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooks like Paramount\/WBD is planning to release directors\u2019 cuts into theaters next year \u2013 limited runs or maybe extended if demand is strong. As a \u2018celebration of movies\u2019 series,\u201d the source tells us.<\/p>\n

These are full-blown events, not quiet re-releases: \u201cRed carpet included \u2013 and Q&A with director \/ cast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which films? \u201cStar Trek (JJs), Snyder, Ayer, Mission Impossible, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

Note that covers both sides of the merger: J.J. Abrams\u2019 Star Trek movies and Mission: Impossible from Paramount, Snyder and Ayer from Warner Bros.<\/p>\n

The timing here is not subtle.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Snyder was back on the Warner Bros. lot hosting a screening of Excalibur for staffers, invited by film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, where he reportedly received a hero\u2019s welcome<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That followed his selfie from the lot set to a song called \u201cHome.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

David Ayer posted from the lot the same day<\/a>, on the tenth anniversary of Suicide Squad.<\/p>\n

The source didn\u2019t name specific titles, but the obvious reads are sitting right there: Zack Snyder\u2019s Justice League on the big screen, possibly the full four-hour cut in IMAX, and the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad finally released, in theaters and on 4K disc.<\/p>\n

Remember, the Ayer Cut has never been released in any form. A theatrical run with a red carpet and a director Q&A would be the biggest fan event Warner Bros. could stage.<\/p>\n

This Is The Ellison Playbook<\/p>\n

A nostalgia-driven theatrical series built around beloved franchises is also exactly what our sources have been describing for months.<\/p>\n

Recall that Ellison and Paramount brass are sitting on internal data tracking the audience shift<\/a> away from messaging-first Hollywood, per our sources, and the answer is a return to crowd-pleasers built for the entire world.<\/p>\n

\u201cEllison wants to take Paramount\/WB back to what works globally \u2014 and that\u2019s rooted in the 80s,\u201d insiders told us in our Star Trek reboot exclusive<\/a>, pointing to Top Gun: Maverick, Michael, and The Dark Knight Returns as the models.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s already operational. Danny McBride is officially directing the new G.I. Joe movie<\/a>, an \u201980s property played straight, and Paramount\u2019s A Nightmare on Elm Street project is set in the world of the 1984 original<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And just this week, Paramount dated its remake of Possession, Andrzej \u017bu\u0142awski\u2019s 1981 cult horror classic, for theaters on June 11, 2027, with Smile director Parker Finn at the helm and Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley starring.<\/p>\n

Classic franchises back in theaters, \u201980s IP remade and played straight, loyal fandoms treated as the core audience. It\u2019s all one strategy.<\/p>\n

\"Star<\/p>\n

Ellison Bets On Physical As Sony Deletes Movies<\/p>\n

A physical media push also fits everything David Ellison\u2019s Paramount has done lately, as the studio is already doubling down on discs<\/a> with the Star Trek 60th anniversary Blu-ray set.<\/p>\n

Compare that to Sony, which is ending PlayStation disc production in January 2028<\/a> and this summer announced it is deleting 551 purchased StudioCanal movies, including Terminator 2 and Apocalypse Now, from customers\u2019 digital libraries on September 1. No refunds.<\/p>\n

Collectors have money to spend and fewer places to spend it. Ellison appears to have noticed.<\/p>\n

\"Zack<\/p>\n

The Deal Isn\u2019t Closed Yet<\/p>\n

One thing to keep in mind: Paramount has agreed not to close the Warner Bros. purchase until a verdict<\/a> in the antitrust trial, which could come as late as June 2027, after twelve states sued to block the merger<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is hoped the two will reach a settlement long before then, something advocated by Christopher Nolan\u2019s DGA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Which is exactly why \u201cnext year\u201d makes sense. This reads as post-close planning, already underway.<\/p>\n

The source says these releases are an easy way to make money from loyal fandoms and, more importantly, gauge demand for future projects.<\/p>\n

That tracks with Snyder\u2019s own recent teasing, from \u201c106\u201d to \u201ccasting\u201d to a \u201cbigger pond.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n
