While music is subjective and a whole host of opinions are all equally valid, there is one universal truth we can all agree on. That is, the Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/a> were always at their very best, with John Frusciante in the band.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the founding lineup of 1982, with Hillel Slovak, captures that early essence of the band, it was when Frusciante joined in \u201889 for Mother\u2019s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik that the band became a musical tour de force. Of course, his arrival was supported by that of Chad Smith, who became a crucial rhythmic dance partner for Flea, but it was Frusciante who took their music into the melodic gods. <\/p>\n

He was the perfect guitarist to keep up with the band\u2019s frenzied approach, rivalling Flea\u2019s virtuosic status to write songs that saw the rhythm and melody sections slug it out for the limelight<\/a>. Guided by the stewardship of Jimi Hendrix, Frusciante\u2019s style could flip between maniacal solo writing and luscious chord arranging that really built the bedrock of the RHCP\u2019s rock-come-funk signature sound.<\/p>\n

But this hard and fast nature of the music, displayed triumphantly on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, seemed to be a reflection of the reality the band lived in. Thrown into the coalface of rock and roll fame, the band lived their lives at full throttle, and so just one year after that seminal album, facing overwhelming fame and a severe heroin addiction, their master craftsman, Frusciante, left the fold.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

After completing drug rehabilitation in the \u201890s, Frusciante rejoined, ready to lay down the guitar parts of a truly iconic three-album run in Californication, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium. But it was that first \u201898 record that Flea remembered as a watershed moment for the band, welcoming Frusciante back into the fold after a period of intense persuasion. It was the bassist who floated the unthinkable back out to Frusciante, promising him a different band should he return a recovered man. <\/p>\n

Flea remembered, \u201cI would try to hint to him and Anthony about accepting the other one, and both of them were like: \u2018Nooo.\u2019 But when John was in the hospital, Anthony visited him, and they started becoming friends again\u2026 I went over to John\u2019s house, and he just started sobbing and said he wanted to do it. [Californication] is the best record the Chili Peppers have ever made.\u201d<\/p>\n

From an objective musical standpoint, there\u2019s some validity in Flea\u2019s case. It saw them return to that vibrant and energetic brand of funk-rock that made them so captivating on the \u201891 record, but with a heightened sense of maturity in their songwriting. Songs like \u2018Otherside\u2019 and \u2018Scar Tissue\u2019 perfectly portrayed this new balance the band had struck, somewhere between tenderness and vitality.<\/p>\n

But from Flea\u2019s personal perspective, it\u2019s even easier to understand why he labels it their greatest record. It symbolised a great deal of reconciliation for a band who spent decades never managing to achieve it<\/a>, nor any real sense of peace. It was the record where the best players available to them had finally found balance and could make the music they were always destined to make.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
