Sir Keir Starmer and Downing Street were determined to appoint Lord Mandelson as US Ambassador at all costs – the man sacked over the vetting scandal, told MPs today.
Sir Olly Robbins, the former head of the Foreign Office, said Downing Street put him under constant pressure to give Mandelson the green light, and had no interest in whether he’d passed security vetting or not.
The damning evidence places the Prime Minister in even greater difficulty over his judgement and competence.
In the Commons, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said Sir Keir’s error in appointing Mandelson decision had put national security at risk and repeated calls for him to resign.
In other news, President Trump told ITV News that America will get a deal with Iran “one way or another”, as the ceasefire between the US and Iran is due to end tomorrow.
And the King and Queen have led a day of commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Queen Elizabeth the Second. In a pre-recorded message, the King said his mother would have been “troubled” by the times we live in.
