Petition calls for Romania’s Eurovision song to be changed over strangulation lyrics
A petition is calling for Romania’s Eurovision entry to change their song or be cut from the final.
Campaigners say song ‘Choke Me’ has lyrics that normalise sexual violence.
A spokesperson for Eurovision told us: “All songs that are submitted as entries for the Eurovision Song Contest are scrutinised before they are officially announced as the entry for the respective participating broadcaster.
“The meaning behind the lyrics of this song was explained to us by the participating broadcaster in Romania, TVR, and we are satisfied it meets all the criteria and rules to be admissible as an entry in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest”.
For help and support in relation to violence, visit the Women’s Aid website, Men’s Advice Line, or contact the National Helpline for Domestic Abuse.
