Starmer arson trial: Mystery figure ‘El Money’ paid for attacks on PM-linked properties – court told
Three men allegedly received payment from a Russian-speaking contact known as “El Money” to carry out a series of arson attacks targeting Sir Keir Starmer, a court has been told.
Roman Lavrynovych, 22, Petro Pochynok, 35, and Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, are accused of setting fire to properties connected to the Prime Minister in May 2025.
Jurors heard on Wednesday that the unidentified contact exchanged hundreds of Telegram messages with the trio in the months before the incidents.
Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson KC said the attacks were preceded by planning and surveillance. He stated that the motive appeared to be financial rather than linked to any specific political or ideological cause.
The court also heard that Mr Lavrynovych claimed he could earn £2,000 for setting a car alight.
All three men, who were born in Ukraine, deny the charges.
On May 8, 2025, a car formerly owned by Sir Keir was found burning at about 3am near his family home in Kentish Town, north London.
Three days later, on May 11, another fire broke out at around 3.15am at a block of flats in Islington where he had previously lived.
A further incident occurred on May 12, when a fire was discovered at the entrance of Sir Keir’s family home in Kentish Town while it was occupied.
The trial continues.
