The French president was on a state visit to Armenia in an unabashed pre-election pitch on behalf of the country’s prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, who is seeking re-election next month, saying the country’s destiny lay with Europe.
Macron also accused Russia of abandoning Armenia after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war that led to Azerbaijan displacing tens of thousands of Armenians.
Pashinyan, who – unlike the leaders of neighbouring Georgia – is increasingly open about his determination to side with Europe, faces a tough challenge at the upcoming elections. Pro-Russia or nationalist parties are trying to end his eight-year rule and accuse him of making too many concessions to Azerbaijan in an effort to win peace.
Note: this video was updated on 05/05/26. A previous version of this post mentioned that Macron was singing La Bohème by Charles Aznavour. However, in this clip he appears to be singing Les Feuilles Mortes by Yves Montand. Other videos on social media showed him singing La Bohème.
