Why does Greece look like Mars?

At first glance, it may look like Mars, a filter, or AI – but it isn’t.

From Libya and Morocco, to Crete and mainland Greece, areas across North Africa and southern Europe have turned a surreal red-orange colour.

That’s due to a Saharan dust storm.

Parts of Australia have also turned red, after a separate – but similar – storm there.

But why is this happening? And what’s the science behind it?
