Watch LIVE – Kemi Badenoch calls for public sector equality laws to be scrapped
Kemi Badenoch is announcing her plans to remove rules which require police officers, nurses and teachers to consider equality issues in their day-to-day work.
The Conservative Party leader is pledging to remove the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), which requires all public sector workers to consider how their work may affect people with different protected characteristics.
It comes a week after a political row broke out over whether the police response to the murder of Henry Nowak was influenced by equality law. Police officers ignored the 18-year-old’s pleas that he had been stabbed after his killer Vickrum Digwa falsely claimed to have been the victim of a racist attack.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said Badenoch’s proposal is “not common sense” and “would turn the clock back.”
