JRM 10 years on: Brexit did deliver an extra £350m a week for the NHS
On the eve of the Gorton and Denton by-election in February, the Labour Party posted the picture of a red bus on its X account. Across it was printed: “Remember the £350 million a week for our NHS? You can’t trust Farage.”
The accompanying caption read: “He’s got a track record of selling the British people false promises.”
There were two problems with this post. First, it wasn’t Nigel Farage who was responsible for the promise of £350m a week for our NHS made during the Brexit campaign. Second, even if the claim had been made by the then Ukip leader, it would in fact have served as a rare reminder of a politician delivering on a promise several times over.
Ten years on, The Telegraph interviewed senior Vote Leave member Jacob Rees-Mogg to find out how the figure was conceived of and whether he believes it was right.
