On Wednesday, Dame Donna Ockenden will unveil the findings of the largest maternity inquiry in NHS history, examining the deaths and injuries of hundreds of babies and the experiences of more than 2,400 families.
The inquiry into stillbirths, neonatal deaths, brain injuries and maternal deaths within Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust comes as police carry out a wider criminal investigation into its alleged maternity failings.
The stories from the city’s two hospitals, Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, are harrowing. Women’s concerns ignored, warning signs overlooked, instances of racist behaviour and decisions taken with lethal consequences.
Bitter infighting, dysfunctional cultures and a dangerous promotion of natural childbirth over safety have also come to light.
As the review’s findings are published, thousands of families are hoping for accountability and assurances that lessons have finally been learnt.
