World Champions: Spain wins the 2026 World Cup, defeating the defending champions Argentina 1-0

Spain has won the 2026 World Cup, snatching the trophy from holders Argentina with a 1-0 victory – breaking a goalless deadlock in the second half of extra time.

Ferran Torres’ first goal of this year’s tournament secured a win for his country and denied Lionel Messi a second straight title in what he has indicated would be his final World Cup match.

“I feel sad,” said Messi, who was moved to tears after receiving his runner-up medal and staring into the crowd at Argentina supporters. “But I am aware that we played our hearts out.”

Argentina were one man down after Enzo Fernandez was shown the red card moments before the 90-minute whistle following a cynical challenge during stoppage time that sent Spain defender Pau Cubarsi cartwheeling into the air.
