UK weather update: the rain won’t stop this drought
After scenes of arid grounds and dried-up water beds caused by five heatwaves across Europe this summer, forecasts of rain may come as a relief.
It has been one of the hottest summers on record, with European farmers warning of an “unprecedented” crisis with their crops and parts of the UK still at risk of water shortages.
Unfortunately, experts say potential rain in the coming days won’t be enough to reverse drought conditions. What’s more, rain could lead to flash flooding.
In this video, the Guardian’s environment correspondent, Damien Gayle, breaks down how our changing climate means we could experience two extremes of British weather at the same time.
