This Could Happen on Your Next Flight
Why are airlines clamping down on power banks and vapes? We took a standard lithium battery to a testing lab to find out – and the results are terrifying.
With 96% of air passengers carrying lithium-powered devices, in-flight battery malfunctions are on the rise. When a battery is damaged or overcharged, it can trigger an unstoppable chain reaction called “thermal runaway,” acting like a flamethrower inside the aircraft cabin.
To see exactly what happens, we teamed up with the University of Warwick to test lithium power banks in an “abuse chamber”. We tested these every day items on their own, buried inside a travel backpack, and finally, enclosed in a fire suppression bag.
