It\u2019s a result that has sent shockwaves through the MAGA movement, (made JD Vance a meme) and forced a rethink of Donald Trump\u2019s global influence.<\/p>\n<p>In this week\u2019s FourSight, Kiran Moodley explores how P\u00e9ter Magyar and his Tisza Party defeated a populist strongman at his own game and given Orban\u2019s allies around the world pause for thought.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide victory, which saw Tisza secure nearly 70% of parliamentary seats, is more than just a change of government &#8211; it points to a seismic shift for global far-right trends and the future of illiberal democracy. <\/p>\n<p>For years, Orban\u2019s Hungary served as the laboratory for a specific populism focussed on control of judicial power and the restricting media freedoms. Now, with JD Vance humbled and Orban\u2019s closest allies (including Trump) left reeling, keen students of the \u2018Orban playbook\u2019 have lost their teacher.<\/p>\n<p>As the Hungarian economy stagnated and inflation eroded living standards, the populist playbook finally failed. We examine the internal scandals and economic pressures that led to a record 80% voter turnout, that showed even entrenched systems can be toppled when the key voter issues drown out grand ideological narratives.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union is breathing a sigh of relief and Moscow has lost its most reliable ally in the EU, but we ask what the lessons really are: it is clear the implications of the election result reach far beyond Budapest.
