How US military aid package could thwart Russia’s summer offensive

  1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

The relief after the [US passed a £48.5 billion military aid package](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2024/04/20/us-vote-ukraine-israel-taiwan-military-aid-deal/) to Ukraine was palpable.

Commentators described it as Ukraine’s “1941 moment”, Ukrainian soldiers cheered and Volodymyr Zelensky praised the US for standing up to “Russian evil”.

But the aid package is dangerously late.

Ukraine has already lost lives and ground and while it might help blunt [Russia’s anticipated summer offensive](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/19/china-fuels-russias-war-ukraine-weapons-components/), it will not be enough to win the war on its own.

John Foreman, Britain’s former military attache in Moscow and Kyiv, said: “It buys Ukraine time until after the US election in November, maybe a year. It [allows them to defend](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/19/ukraine-downs-russian-bomber-armed-with-cruise-missiles/) but the key problem hasn’t gone away. Ukraine is having to live hand to mouth on arms.”

The package doubles US military aid to Ukraine since [Russia’s invasion in February 2022](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/russia-ukraine-war/) and will crucially allow support and logistics mechanisms for the delivery of weapons to continue to operate.

  2. One big gamechanger will be the amount of artillery shells going to ukraine. Not only can the US send more cluster and gmlrs but the US has had time to partially refill stocks and ramp up product since the last package meaning there will be a large supply of 155mm from the US that will mix together with the czech initiatives 1.5 million shells and the ever increasing supply from Europe. This will probably mean, for the rest of the war that ukrainian supply of artillery will only increase on average. This is bad for russia. Lack of artillery has been the biggest issue next to manpower shortage and both those issues are going to taken away in the next few months along with many other disruptive things like long range air defence, f16s and more attamcs. If russia couldn’t make gains with lack of ukrainian shells, it’s unlikely they will ever be in a place to make large gains again in this war

  3. Hopefully this allows some breathing room for Ukrainian and European manufacturing capabilities to further expand. I think Europe has learned a valuable lesson, the US cannot be relied on. This package would have saved thousands of lives and significantly shortened the war if it had come through months ago. Such as it is, Ukraine has a real fighting chance now.

  4. Russia is about to feel the full force of the Us Army of the 1980s.

    No wonder Putler is terrified.

  5. I hope that Ukraine gets what it needs quickly and has a strategy and is tactically ready to unleash hell.

Whatever the intelligence is showing it seems maybe even the US is accepting the gloves need to come off a d Ukraine should be able to do what it needs even if that’s striking deep into Russia.

I bet the more recent intelligence is showing more military support.from China and that has finally got.some.of the republicans to wake up

  6. It is so sad to see that we went from being hyped for the Ukrainian offensive to now just hoping Ukraine can stop the expected Russian one.

  7. Gotta get them more atacms, Bradley’s, and bring those F-16’s to bear. Germany? Any day you want to unleash those Taurus missles would be super. I bet the will once F-16s start operating

  8. The Russians will soon learn what life is like south of heaven.

It’s a valley of desolation and perpetual infernal hatred. They want hell and we will give it to them.

  9. Honestly guys, I think it’s good. I’m glad we passed the aid package… it should have happened MONTHS ago. But I think it’s at an un winnable point for Ukraine (Just my over invested Redditor ass guessing from the pages I follow so take it with a grain of salt). I think the absolute best they can do is hold what they’ve got and they’ll end up in negotiation… more likely (my pov guess) they’ll bash the Russians for a bit. Maybe even take back some minor territory, but the way Russia fights, it won’t matter. Their logistics have DRAMATICALLY improved, training and equipment are night and day from the start of the war and morale is higher. In the hard times they can just throw conscripts at the problem until Ukraine’s out of ammo again. Then the professionals come in. They might lose everything.. I think their only real hope is nato troops entering to support, or we’re finally going to love to see the big one. WWIII seems like it’s coming

  10. Hopefully Ukraine has been rationing ammo. Now the supply chain is rolling again they can stop rationing ammo and deploy it to the fight

  11. So pleased the bill was passed – you’ll now have the means to kick the Orcs back into Mordor
