Trying to identify this WW2 location….possibly a park

  1. Trying to identify this location….photo taken May 1942, possibly near Ta Qali or Kalafrana – not much to go on: high kerb with chamfered edge, the tree and its proximity to the path, the two trees behind them and the curved edge of the kerb/path, and the bench (circled) which can barely be seen. Found a photo of a similar bench, taken in Valletta. If this area still exists, after 80+ years, I’d love to recreate the pic (my Grandpa is in it) – tried contacting Parks Malta, no reply yet, but maybe a dog-walker, cyclist, or jogger recognises it….?

  2. Those benches were everywhere, some places still have them. Next to impossible to say where this was taken.

  3. It could be that that particular bench was replaced with another one of a different shape. And it’s unlikely that those trees survived until today… trees that survived the two world wars have lost the battle against the current treephobic government that has vowed to kill every tree that dares provide any type of shade in this island…

  4. Unfortunately, likely every detail in this photo has changed in the last 80 years. The trees, the curb, the unpaved road… Even those blokes have probably moved from that spot by now.

  5. Hard to say… but probably somewhere coastal. Palm trees and benches are typically found on waterfronts (Sliema, Bugibba, Masascala)

  6. I am Maltese and as soon as I saw the picture sonehow suspected it was Ta’Qali. I have shared the photo with the Aviation Museum boys at the same place to try to narrow it down.

  7. Honestly by quickly looking at the tree basins and bench, it reminded me of the open area infront of phoenicia in valletta before it got paved with the mosaic style tiles it had until the recent redesign.

This could be anytime from late 40s until brits left. So if it is there, it looks nothing like that.

  8. I think it is in Floriana, near il-Fosos. If you have more information where your grandpa was stationed you can find the exact spot. This area has been renovated so that bench is gone.
