For the record. SNP member here, had Nicola Sturgeons Christmas cards on my fridge, etc etc.

I have never, since I entered Politics bright eyed in 2014 voting for Independence seen the amount of greeting as I've come across over the past week. It's as if by the SNP losing, people are ready to civil war against their fellow neighbors for daring to vote for someone else. I tell you if I see another person misunderstand Holyrood and Westminster I might actually scream. Fully going on about how a Labour government now means Scottish people are paying for eye tests or prescriptions as if that's how it works… Why on earth weren't we paying before with a Tory government then!?!?

The amount of Scotland flag emoji in names just finding ANYTHING to be upset about is actually horrible to see. It just makes us look like a country of complete moany bastards. I genuinely thought the SNP blob was better than this. Grown men and women arguing over practically anything, from Starmer daring to meet English mayors and not inviting Scotland (???), to now our SNP MPs greeting over English Flags being present IN ENGLAND, in downing street when it's clearly due to England being in the Euros is downright appalling.

Why am I posting this here? Because there is a concentrated SNP base here and frankly I want the SNP to improve, not sink to the lows of the conservative party and start culture warring with the English as a way to secure Alba voters.

I've seen the same rhetoric here aswell, and frankly people need to get a grip and reset the party before the Scottish Elections come in. I was very focused on getting Labour in UK Wide and then an SNP government in Holyrood but the state of some people is just detestable and what makes it worse is the SNP MPs are seemingly endorsing the tone.

  1. I think folk get too caught up in the online bubble and need to ask themselves: are normal people likely to give a fuck about this? Most of the time the answer is no, as much as i don’t think the optics of scottish labour* being flanked by english flags are good i don’t think it will have much cut through.

*see also the insistence that there’s no such thing as scottish labour, naebody cares mate, naebody fucking cares.

  2. > “concentrated SNP base”

lol feels like you may not have been around here for the last few months? This sub is pretty strongly unionist leaning towards going full gammon for the last few months / almost a year.

But yeh with the SNP / indy movement in a period of general disarray there isn’t much to look hopeful to so I do think the general vibe is a bit moany at the moment.

Also Sarwar trying to hide the England flags when they were trying to talk about how important Scotland is is genuinely quite funny.

  3. This is the first major political setback for the SNP in the lifetime of many supporters. They’re unsure how to grieve for lack of a better word in an electoral sense maybe?

  4. People not being able to differentiate Westminster and Holyrood frustrates me no end. Blame Westminster where it’s due, but if something is the responsibility of Holyrood, then target ire accordingly.

100% agree with the moaning as well. I honestly think it partly comes down to a lot of SNP voters not being used to losing. I suspect they’ll get more civil as more defeats happen…. I hope.

  5. I’ve long thought it’s basically unavoidable that the SNP- or at least their fans- are going to push an ‘everything’s shit’ narrative. Otherwise, if people went around thinking a more Stoic ‘Well, could be worse I suppose’, they wouldn’t get the support.

The real problem with this, is that it’s an incredibly unhealthy outlook on life on a personal level for many people. I think there must be a lot of comorbidity between issues like depression and the more fervent nationalists.

Fine, call out things that could be improved. But there are many actively seeking to push a narrative that they are living in some sort of hellscape because of the bedroom tax or whatever- which must look mental if you’ve just emigrated here from Somalia.

  6. I’ve definitely seen an uptick of people moaning about people moaning.

Jokes aside, yes I’ve seen it. Some people just need to get out their bubble and speak to people outside their social circles. If this sub was representative of the outside world, we’d have an overwhelming support throughout the country for independence and the SNP and Greens. There was a poll here with responses from this subreddit asking who they’d poll for which didn’t remotely reflect actual polling last week.

  7. Outrage at other people’s outrage on social media posts, Why waste your time?

  8. It’s just Reddit mate. Imagine any of these Bald actually trying to fight a civil war.

  9. Similar background to you and I am also sad to see it when it happens, but remember that most normal people don’t bother commenting so you see a disproportionate amount of batshit online.

I had hoped to see the SNP retain more seats, their vote share held up, but not enough to win the seats, we all know why it happened, and them getting a slap is not the worst thing ever because quite frankly they had it coming.

You thought they were better than this? Why? lol

  11. This happens after every election, no matter which way it goes. I feel like it usually subsides after a few weeks/months except for the vocal crowd who live on social media in that bubble – pretty easy to avoid.

  12. Jeez, that tweet you showed – that’s not just a random person, that’s one of the SNP’s MPs!

Did he miss Scotland not quite getting out of the group stages? 🙁

  13. Haven’t seen any complaining at all.

Maybe you’re making things up for attention?

  14. I’ve not noticed any of that, but don’t use twitter and don’t interact with anyone who has extreme views in general.

  15. You have presented good takes in general I think!

The Hollywood vs Westminster thing is pretty poorly understood across most parties voters from what I can see. Infact someone close to me made me realise how you can be politically engaged to quite an extent and still not fully know.

The outrage over flags is pretty funny at first until you realise that these people are being serious and think it’s doing any good. I find they go hand in hand with the independence at any cost to the country in the future(not all of the Indyref) part of the voting population who long ago seem to have abandoned reality or the ability to engage or have a discussion with.

    *edited – typos

  16. I’ve not noticed enough to comment on most of your post but can we talk about one point you made about free eye tests, prescriptions or dental checks, etc?

Why are these things being free for everyone such a big thing??

I’m quite lucky in that I don’t need regular prescriptions or need to visit the dentist too often. I know that not everyone is that lucky but I wouldn’t mind paying a few pounds for each of these things if it meant there was more money in the budget for schools and hospitals.

Is there ever any consideration for optional payments or some other way to balance this so that people who could pay a bit have an option to? Or, would it just be more expensive to administer than it would bring in.

(Hoping I don’t get downvoted into oblivion for asking a question).
