Hi, may I ask what the best way to get from Helsinki airport to Tampere is?

I tried vr.fi but I get this, even though for other days before August it shows options. I got the app and it just got more confusing.

A friend told me about OnniBus, but not sure if I will catch the one at 1:15 am if my plane (is supposed to) land only one hour before that. I’d buy tickets on the spot but I think it’s more expensive like that? This is still almost 2 months in advance.

  1. Do you need to travel at 1 in the morning? Why not sleep the night in Helsinki and travel in the day? You could take the train or a bus at your convenience.

  2. Looks like something is wrong 🤔 it should definitely allow you to make a purchase. This notification is usually shown when you try to buy a city rail ticket (i.e. from Helsinki maini to Helsinki airport) at vr.fi

  4. Use HSL app to buy ticket from Helsinki Airport to Pasila and then VR to buy a ticket from Pasila to Tampere

  5. What dates and what are you putting into the VR App (or Vr.fi) ?

    Basically, the airport station is in the HSL area, but you can buy tickets for VR trains to/from the HSL area – they are included in the price.

    Choose “Airport” to Tampere – you’ll be given a route via Tikkurila. The first train will be a local train (Lähijuna P) and then you transfer onto an InterCity train.

    VR uses demand pricing; on the day prices for that trip are in the region of 25-35 eur. There is a slower service (Lähijuna R Tikkrila-Tampere) which for the above whole journey comes to 17.20eur (always the same price, but a journey time of 2h33).

    If you land at 1h15 – looking at a random week day, there’s a P- train about 4h46, arriving Tikkurila at 5h04, then Intercity from there at 5h16 arriving 6h53.

    hsl app is in finnish so I don’t know about that but you can purchase one time ticket from r-kioski at the airport BC-zone. There is no tickertsale inside the local train

  7. Most likely local train (i.e. from airport) schedules have not been published that far out. 

  8. You should be able to buy a train ticket from VR. I looked for tickets from Helsinki airport to Tampere and did not get that error. It should only come if you are trying to book a ticket inside the HSL area, and Tampere most definitely is not. Are you sure you had the correct start and end stations?

  9. What dates are you going? At least when I make a random journey on eg June 26, I’m able to book from Tampere to the airport (with a change in Tikkurila/Vantaa). This is your best option as the train takes your right to the airport.

  10. Basically you can take the local train to Tikkurila, then the IC or Pendolino train to Tampere from Tikkurila. Separate companies, so two different tickets needed. Buy the local train ticket at R-Kioski or Alepa, then the other at Vr.fi or at Tikkurila station ticket vending machine. No ticket counter at the station, so using the VR app/website or the vending machine are your options. You can buy a ticket now for August etc at VR.fi. I just checked. Some of the prices are incredibly low if you buy now.
