At a conservative estimate, 262,000 Iranian soldiers died, many in the wasteful human wave tactics. Over 100,000 Iraqi soldiers died, the first of many.
Over 100,000 civilians on both sides died in missile attacks and aerial bombing, mostly Iranian. Another 100,000 Kurdish civilians died in Saddam Hussein’s genocidal Anfal campaigns.
This was from what has also been named the “First Gulf War”. There would only be more bloodshed in the decades to follow.
A huge pet peeve of mine is seeing some of these photos in black and white as if the war was 70 years ago. I don’t know exactly why they’re black and white and if there’s a good reason, but it takes away from the reality to me.
One of the most insane brutal wars of the 20th century, and most people don’t even know about it.
I’ve always been fascinated by this one as it was so recent but we don’t hear much about it. Is there any good popular media (movies, shows, comics, etc) that depict this conflict?
Only one I know is “Under the Shadow” which is a horror set during the war, but not about the conflict itself.
I spoke with somebody at my work who grew up in Iran during the Iran and Iraq war. He said he would attempt to calculate the trajectory of incoming missiles from Iraq to estimate where it would land within his city.
Another interesting point about this war are the many confirmed aerial kills from the F-14 Tomcats, which were provided to Iran during the Shah’s reign.
I read a historian’s paper on this war and it seems the Iranian Air Force performed quite well and caused a lot of trouble for Iraq.
All seems kinda pointless.
Can anyone translate the graffiti in the second pic?
Funded by the US with weapon deliveries to the man himself Saddam Hussein
>[T]he United States actively supported the Iraqi war effort by supplying the Iraqis with billions of dollars of credits, by providing U.S. military intelligence and advice to the Iraqis, and by closely monitoring third-country arms sales to Iraq to make sure that Iraq had the military weaponry required.
It’s crazy that Iraq with an estimated 13m people attacked a larger more populous Iran 38 million.
Wow I didn’t realize the Iran-Iraq war lasted 8 goddamn years.
This is one of the most interesting wars to me. Too bad it isn’t covered heavily in the west
I remember as a kid reading a forum thread, probably early 2000s, with posts by a vet of the Iranian side, and thinking “wow that’s fucking crazy that I’m reading a dudes thoughts and stories who actually was in this”. No idea what forum it was even on, I wish I could find it. The discussion was about Karbala 9
My grandfather did bombing runs over Iran. He rarely talks about the war and is now dead scared of planes. Most useless war ever.
Its crazy how little video we have of this war.
the wording of the first picture is kind weird. did anyone else assume iraq had a massive tank force charging the way into iran or something well no he only had a total of 500-1,150 total operational so what i bet less than half would be in the initial invasion lol not nearly as impressive as the little info note made me believe.
Apparently there was a phase in the war called “the war of the cities” where the Iraqis were directly targeting Iranian cities “Bomber” Harris-style in air and ballistic missile strikes, and when the Iranians realized this, they attacked Iraqi cities in similar ways.
My friends father was Persian and recalled trucks rolling up to his school and shipping off whole classes of boys directly to the front lines.
