Automation is no longer just about following instructions, Agentic AI marks a turning point in how technology operates. 

Unlike traditional systems that simply execute predefined instructions, AI agents can plan, reason, adapt, and coordinate multiple steps in pursuit of a goal. They allocate resources, re-prioritize tasks, and make bounded decisions autonomously. In short, they exercise agency. And as systems gain agency, a more important question emerges: 

Whose perspective is embedded in that agency – and who remains accountable for its decisions? 

Historically, automation was built around relatively narrow assumptions. Workflows reflected dominant operating models. Data reflected partial realities. When systems were rule-based and limited in scope, the impact of those blind spots was contained. Agentic AI changes that. 

Agents won’t just execute tasks. They’ll interpret context, weigh trade-offs, and orchestrate outcomes. They will influence hiring pipelines, financial approvals, insurance assessments, compliance decisions, and access to essential services. As autonomy increases, so does the risk that embedded assumptions scale with it. 

Bias in AI models is rarely intentional. It is structural, rooted in training data, optimization metrics, and definitions of success. For example, a hiring tool may create a representation gap among different groups if it is trained on data that over-reflects some applicants and under-represents others. When an agent operates on incomplete or skewed information, its decisions will reflect those distortions. And because agentic systems act dynamically, small inaccuracies can compound over time. The result is an automated process that can inadvertently perpetuate inequity, even when no one intended for the system to behave that way. 

That is why diversity in design is not about optics, but about system integrity. And integrity depends on something fundamental: data reliability and architectural discipline. 

Agentic systems rely on large language models, retrieval mechanisms, and document intelligence to interpret vast amounts of unstructured information. But not every task should be handled probabilistically. 

There is a right place for generative and probabilistic approaches, such as summarization, reasoning across context, or synthesizing insights. And there is a right place for deterministic systems, particularly where accuracy, traceability, and reproducibility are non-negotiable. 

If information is inconsistently extracted or probabilistically inferred without validation, decision-making becomes fragile. The autonomous nature of agentic systems amplifies whatever foundation it is built upon, strong or weak. 

For high-stakes workflows that manage contracts, financial records, medical documentation, or regulatory filings, using reliable, deterministic data extraction is essential. Structured information must be captured accurately and consistently before it is passed into higher-level reasoning systems. Trustworthy automation begins with trustworthy data pipelines. 

Probabilistic intelligence can then augment that foundation by interpreting context, identifying patterns, and supporting complex orchestration – but it should not replace precision where precision is required. Designing agentic systems means deliberately combining the right technologies for the right purpose. 

When decisions materially affect human lives – hiring outcomes, credit eligibility, healthcare pathways, legal determinations – subject matter expertise must remain in the loop. Not as a symbolic safeguard, but as a meaningful layer of review and accountability. 

Human experts bring contextual understanding, ethical judgment, and domain nuance that no model can fully encode. They can interrogate edge cases, challenge assumptions, and override recommendations when fairness or complexity demands it.  

But what does this mean for us? On International Women’s Day, this becomes a reminder of the responsibility we carry. Progress in AI is not simply about building systems that act independently, but more about designing systems that operate on reliable foundations, reflect diverse realities, combine technologies thoughtfully, and preserve human expertise where it matters most. 

The future of automation will not be defined solely by how sophisticated AI agents become. It will be defined by how carefully their data pipelines are engineered, how intentionally probabilistic and deterministic methods are balanced, and how consistently human oversight is embedded in critical decision points. 

As systems gain agency, inclusive design, technological fit-for-purpose, and expert supervision become inseparable from innovation. 

The next phase of automation will simply not be more intelligent. It must be more deliberate, more reliable, and more aligned with the diverse societies it serves. 

Only then can agentic AI make decisions that are not just efficient, but equitable, accurate, and worthy of trust.
