  1. What this comment section should be: discussions about the decisions and motivations of the era, the effects of collapse of USSR, why is it remembered so differently across countries etc.

What it’s most likely going to be: best day ever!! fcuk Russia!! better ded than red!!111

  2. That Yeltsin destroyed Russia. I am not even mad about that, he did it to his own people..

Problem is that they again allowed German supremacy on the continent..

  3. People voting for Kravchuk instead of Chornovi, is the start of a lot of current Ukrainian woes. Followed by Kuchma winning the 1994 election.

That’s what happens after 70 years of Soviet doctrination.

  4. Moments before disaster

In all seriousness, yeah this decision was probably one of the worst things to actually happen in the end of the 20th century-mass looting of former Soviet States, life expectancy plummeted, child prostitution was rampant. An awful time in which much of the former ussr could’ve found themselves embroiled in conflict.

Not to mention, I don’t even think someone like Putin would’ve been able to come to power if the Ussr hadn’t dissolved

  5. Truly one of the worst events to happen in the 20th century.
The crooks ignored the People’s wishes and carved up the state for their own gain and self enrichment, leaving the rest to suffer in bloody ethnic and civil conflicts, bandit clashes, drug cartels and child/sex trafficing.
If they truly wished the Best for their people, they would have ensured everything went smoothly, but they were oligarchs and elites who were given power by Gorbachev.

Now we have Putin, Lukashenko: the winners of the competition between oligarch cliques that was dubbed as a “prospering democracy” by the Americans.

Lets not mention Central Asian States that have a long line of their totalitarian or authoritarian dictators. Ukraine is an exeption because their inner struggle was not won by any side, so they continue to exist in a limbo of corrupt officials fighting for influence.

You shouldn’t hold any sympathy for most of these people, they were not the “saviors” of the soviet people, they were just vultures tearing a wounded body apart.

  6. Let’s also not forget how this treachery affected Asian members of the Union, like Turkmenistan. Sometimes it seems like some other ex-member countries couldn’t care less about them.
