Big space fan, but that rocket went out of control just off Cork and Kerry and wonder what the worst case scenario might have been

  1. That’s what they get for crossing that Irish sea border those Unionists are mad about, without the proper papers 😉

  2. The Peoples Republic Of Cork responds with the full might of its nuclear arsenal leading to complete global thermonuclear war.

  3. The bad thing is, we can’t shoot it down if it’s out of control and en route to where people live.

Whilst the UK could scramble QRF to take it out, it could be too late by then.

  4. That’s the track of the aircraft that launched it. It launched towards the south and re-entered south of the Canaries and burned up. Worst case scenario: some investors are pissed.

  5. That’s the flight path of the carrier plane, the rocket went ‘out of control’ over the south Atlantic a few minutes after launch.

  6. I’m blaming the dubs. I have a group of friends one from Dublin, Cork and kerry going to send this to the group seen who blames who.

  7. Could have struck somewhere in Kerry and caused several tens of euros worth of damage.

  8. A strange map of Ireland, doesn’t even show Cork Harbour! …and some of those peninsulas are just plain wrong…

  9. Anti immigrant brigade on stand-by.

All together now.. “we don’t want your missiles, unless there full of drugs and beer.

  10. Probably the worst case for Ireland is the 747 getting its wing blown off and the Irish Coast Guard having to coordinate the rescue/recovery operation for the crew.

Portugal was apparently at greater risk than us from falling debris as the rocket climbed to orbit.

In the end the rocket did achieve an orbit, just not the one required to launch its payload.

Incidentally we’re in the path of other launches. The Irish Coast Guard were on standby for the SpaceX Dragon crewed launches which pass over Shannon.

  11. It wasn’t “out of control just off Cork and Kerry”. That’s the path of the carrier plane, not the rocket itself. The LauncherOne rocket deployed south at the bottom of that loop, away from Ireland, and the first part of the launch completed successfully; it was only the second stage that failed to work correctly, and it burned up in the atmosphere.

  12. It was far off. Meteor cameras captured the fireball coming down off Lanzarote. It also released from the plane and ignited its thrusters pointing away from Ireland. As well as in the worst case scenario the rocket has a flight termination system which can be detonated by the rocket itself or remotely in the control room, meaning worst case scenario is a bit of debris washing up in Cork or Kerry, rockets too small and launched from too high an altitude to do any damage. This nonsense on the news of “falling rocket debris” 12 hours after it failed is just to stir drama really.
