Dented car

Hi! I’m a foreigner in finland.
Yesterday I backed into a parked car. I took pictures and left my contacted info.
Since this is the first time I encountered this incident I’m not sure about the step to take. While the owner hasnt contacted me yet, I want to prepare for my options.
– Should I ask the owner to bring his car to a place of my choosing and I will pay for the cost?
– Or should the owner does his fixing and send me the bill? (Risking higher charge if the owner went to an expensive place)

I attach picture below, what would be a good estimated cost to fix this dent? I live in Helsinki region and I have car insurance but I was hoping the cost could be low so I dont need to claim

  1. Your insurance would pay it. The owner needs info about your insurance (so called green card if foreign insurance)

Fixing something like that is easily many thousands. Whole door might need to be changed. It will certainly be cheaper with insurance than out of pocket

  2. You should make “vahinkoilmoitus”, an announcement to your insurance company. With that you explain what happened and that you caused it. You need the registration number for both cars.

After that the insurance companies take care of the case, you might receive an invoice later, but it should be a couple of hundred euro “omavastuu” max. Your car insurance pays the most of it.

I don’t recommend doing it any other way, it would be a hassle.

  3. Is the car you drove registered in Finland? Do you have inureance for it? Is It short term rental?

Too little information. But as someone else mentioned get in contact with the owner of the dented vehicle.

  4. Nah, contact your insurance company and let them know. It isn’t worth the hassle of trying to do it personally and you’ll find it costs you very little of anything through your insurance.

  5. I got hit once like this (not big damage), owner found somehow my phone number (maybe from traffic registration info) then they told me to visit any OP approved repair shop I want. I took it there and they fixed it.

Never needed to interact with the guilty party.

  6. Kudos for your honesty. Most people would just leave the scene and act like nothing happened.
To those people that leave I say “Saatanan happivarkaat.”

Hope everything goes well on your part!

  7. Thank you everyone for your help!
I filed a damage report to my insurance like you suggested and a couple of hours later the owner called. We talked and he seemed calm and understanding, even though my mistake costs him his time. I think this case should be done here.
    Cheers!
