Reddit is seeking a more equitable arrangement with Google as the search giant increasingly leverages forum discussions for its AI Overviews, potentially reducing user click-throughs to original community threads. Speaking during Reddit’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman stated that the platform is working to establish a win-win relationship, noting that while Reddit’s extensive archive of personal experiences and advice is critical for AI search models, aggregated answers placed directly on Google search result pages eliminate the necessity for users to visit the source platform.
While stopping short of blaming AI Overviews entirely, Reddit acknowledged rising volatility in search referrals. In a letter to shareholders, Huffman reported that search engine traffic proved “choppy” and volatile toward the end of the quarter, reiterating that Reddit is focusing on building a daily direct destination rather than relying on inconsistent drive-by search traffic. The friction highlights evolving tensions within the expanded partnership forged in February 2024, which granted Google access to Reddit’s Data API to train AI models and integrate live discussion threads into search results.
Google maintains that its AI search implementations enhance web discovery, with Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently asserting that AI Overviews drive billions of outbound visits weekly and boost overall search engagement. However, Reddit emphasizes that while AI tools condense the broader internet into summaries, value remains concentrated in human context, debates, and first-hand accounts.
The traffic concerns came alongside stellar financial metrics for Reddit’s second quarter, which saw total revenue surge 61 percent year-on-year to $805 million, net income double to $253 million, and global daily active unique users expand 18 percent to 130.3 million.
